Today is World AIDS Day.

The thought is on awareness - of the history, of the danger, of the on-going plague in southern Africa. The news talks about how it's been around 25 years and how treatment has changed and how the disease might now be seen (by people who can afford the treatment) as a chronic illness rather than a death sentence.

On NPR this morning they estimated that there are at any time some 250,000 people in the U.S. who don't know they're infected. I happened to catch a snippet of a talkshow on BET just now that is geared toward women. The episode seems to be about AIDS but it started off with the hostess acknowledging that it's a touchy, nerve-racking subject.

so before I wander off in search of a dead horse to beat: Get tested.

Your local health department may offer free testing, some may even help you keep anonymous. Planned Parenthood, your doctor and many other clinics offer testing. There are kits you can buy online such as at Home Access.

Now, now. Don't argue with me. Of course it'll be negative. Do it anyway.
