So... I still believe freedom of expression is a cornerstone of liberty. But when I said
shouting fire in a theatre doesn't work anymore I was clearly mistaken.
I never really understood all the bad comics who railed against the push for politically correct speech. Usually their antidote was chaotic screeching of insensitive cruelty and was startlingly unfunny. I could understand feeling constrained by being politically correct - it's another limit on speech. But I never understood the desire to break with it on purpose.
Now I'm just plain old glad to know
why it's a good idea to at least be polite when shouting "fire!" I don't know if the idiom exists in the Muslim world but I keep thinking
"those in glass houses..." though might I point out with some big time relief at this not having a genesis in these United States.
