Author's Notes

Jan 28, 2013 13:45

Firstly, I apologize in advance for ranting. If you wish to not read this just ignore it. It's just that it's been with me for a while now and I feel like if I don't let it out somehow I'm going to explode... or something.

As the subject mentions, my rant revolves around Author's Notes.

For me, the A/N section is where I write down everything, from where I got inspiration to write a piece, what was the piece based on, to daily stuffs that have been happening to me, as well as offers and requests.

As a writer AND a reader, I read A/N just to see where the author got the idea to write that particular piece. We constantly find inspirations and share them, so I share where I get the inspiration from as well. For this particular type of A/N, I really don't mind if people don't read it. I understand that not all readers are fellow writers and sometimes they just don't care where you get the inspiration from.

The second type, I'm a bit touchy, especially if the commenter then tries to go all smart-ass on me. There was an incident (I shall not mention names and fandom), where I post a fic that I clearly stated was based on a particular movie after I saw clips of the movie. A commenter then tried to "subtly" hint that I was plagiarising the movie, saying "It sounds a lot like "blah"" and I replied that if they had read my A/N, they'd see that I mentioned right at the top that it WAS based on that particular movie. Annoyed the heck out of me, especially because I don't do plagiarism and I always give credits to where credit is due, especially if I adopt the plot of published works.

The third type, daily stuffs, I don't care much as well, because I know people don't care what's happening in the author's life. They're only here to read stories, not read the author's "diary entry".

The fourth type, offers. I sometimes make good-willed offers, especially after I see fellow writers do it. I offered to write based on prompts given to me in a journal post I wrote a while back, but after a couple of requests, the post died. Again, I made another offer to write birthday fics for people whose birthdays are coming up, but I'm sure that none of you saw that particular A/N.

The last type, requests. I don't make requests often, but when I do, I expect some good people to respond. I once made a request asking for romantic movies that I could gain inspiration from, and from about 10+ commenters, only one of them showed the sign of reading that particular A/N and actually recommended some good romantic movies to me. I even went as far as to bold the font of the section of my request to gain people's attention, but still it was breezed through.

You might think I'm childish and unreasonable for ranting like this. Truth is, it has happened for too long, I've been hurt and disappointed more times than I can count. The number of people who actually read my A/N ever since I first started writing can be counted with my fingers. I'm so tired of putting my heart on my sleeve and having them ignored time and again.

For now, I'm considering deleting the A/N section altogether and only including inspirations and credits to where I got the plot from. That way I wouldn't need to put too much effort into something that would only hurt me in the end, 'cause it feels like I'm writing it for my own reading.

Those who actually read my A/Ns and have been good friends to me, I sincerely thank you. You know who you are, and I'm glad I've met you. Some of them have left LJ, and it made me sad, but I'm trying to be positive and look to the future.

Anyway, that's the end of my ranting session. If my rant had offended you in any way, then simply ignore it and let's just go on with our merry little lives.
