If you've been reading Simon R. Green's stuff (his horrible horrible yet somehow insanely addictive stuff), you already know that the man never read something he didn't want to put in his books: the Deathstalker Series was Star Wars-Dune-40K-X-Men-Neuromancer, the Eddie Drood books are the genre kitchen-sink setting to end all genre kitchen sink settings (superheroes meets James Bond meets the X-Files meets the Dresden Files meets Planetary meets ... Deathstalker), Nightside is ... basically the same thing and so on.
Just thought I'd make especially mention of Bunny Hollis, a former SAS combat sorcerer turned freelance mercenary who actually gives Eddie Drood (and his sidekick girlfriend Molly Metcalf) a halfway decent challenge. This is because he is soooo totally Sergeant Major William Gravel with fewer(!) scruples and 10 times the joie de vivre. Alternatively, if I'm being meta, facetious *and* pretentious, I'd say he's Green's idea of one of Gravel's colleagues with a similar skillset who went all the way off the reservation instead of just mostly.
Put that together with the references to Description Theory and it's clear that Simon R. Green is a big Warren Ellis fan. Have I said this before? Probably. Don't care, still true.
