This year's yearlusts: fusion crossovers and stripped-down scifi universes. In the former, two settings are melded together by reimagining Setting A's characters in Setting B. Done right, you get true seamlessness instead of contrived devices like random interdimensional portals or time travel.
The latter are settings built from the barest of essentials: Firefly, Avatar, Pitch Black (if, as I do, you choose to ignore Chronicles). They are sparse, spare, clean and efficient; the diametric opposite of the kitchen sink.
