In the course of my research for Weepee Prime (work-in-progress), I've been reading extensively up on ancient Japan in general and the Muromachi period in particular. Now it could be the livejournal pseudointellectual influences talking, but I have this theory that the entire Izanagi/Izanami myth was created because some dude witnessed childbirth - or a particularly bloody period - and just freaked the fuck out.
That or he met a PMSing woman for the first time.
