If there is anything that could have happened to me that had a more desirable outcome or as deep-a spiritual meaning that what had happened to me tonight I would say that I was dreaming.
I was visiting Tony at his apartment when i took notice of a kitten in distress (loud yowling and crying). I chased the sounds to a concrete box that was constructed over the mouth of a very small crawlspace in order to keep feral cats out. Well it appears that they sealed kittens inside as well. Tony said that the box had been there for a week or more.
There is absolutely no way I could leave without at least attempting a rescue. Tony and I set out with a crab cage, fire gloves, a flashlight, and determined hearts to try to rescue the kittens.
We opened the box and it revealed a very small crawlspace...riddled with pipes, cobwebs, junk, rocks, and animal bones that could only have been the carcasses of dead cats. Tony attempted first to crawl in to retrieve a very small, scared, and distressed kitten that was within view of the flashlight. After about 10 min, he gave up due to the cat going further into the space.
So I decided to go in (against my better judgement and my slight fear of these types of places). Able to move quicker and be more agile in such a small place I was able to corner the kitten only long enough for me to grab at its leg and release it with fear of hurting it. I was determined. I found it in a far dark corner and made a diving move into the dirt and snagged it by the scruff. Not hurting it i bolted to the opening and placed it in the cage.
The cat was very scared but very tiny and starved. Thats when we took notice of mommy coming to investigate. Scared that mommy would reject it because of me touching it we left the kitten in the cage and walked away to see what mommy would do. Satisified that mommy wanted the kitten we made the ultimate decision to give the kitten a sporting chance and turn it loose. We brought it over to the edge of the woods and opened the cage. As we were walking away mommy came over to baby and sniffed. The kitten rubbed against mommy and we smiled.
I turned to look and the kitten started to follow us with mommy in tow. We said in light voices to "Go, you're free... go to mommy". The kitten sat and watched us and then went to go with mommy into the woods. Side by side they walked and then before they slipped into the underbrush....mommy stopped... looked at us.... as if she was saying thank you...
I tell you... it was surreal... amazing and truely heart warming. i honestly think mommy and baby both thanked us before disappearing into the night together.
I would totally do it again to rescue an animal...especially a baby.
We attemped to look for the other, larger kitten.... but it was nowhere to be seen. Obviously mommy was happy enough to leave it so we did.
And thats my story... It feels good.
