4,507 miles until destination

So I'm writing this blog entry from 36,500 feet, somewhere over Russia, sitting aboard Virgin Atlantic's VS900 to Tokyo. This is my first time flying with Virgin and despite getting a bit of a run around at the airport due to the plane getting switched, I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far. Despite the plane swap they got me the same window seat I'd asked for ahead of time and as a bonus there's no one sat next to me so I've got plenty of space. Last time I went to Japan it was with ANA and while their service was perfectly decent it felt a bit barebones. Virgin on the other hand has provided lots of little niceties, like flight slippers, pre-meal snacks, a toothbrush and so on. Food has been excellent thus far. The only thing I could fault them on is the rather outdated on-board entertainment system, that isn't quite up to snuff with what I'm used to. Oh well never mind, I've got my laptop to amuse myself and feel confident in using it for once. The Japanese airline flights I've been on always seem to make it very unclear as to whether or not they allow the use of laptops during the flight.

I touch down in Tokyo at 9:30ish in the morning on Tuesday, which will be my first morning arrival. I'm not hugely looking forward to the challenge of staying awake until the evening. I'm expecting the weather to be warm (in the mid 20s!) so I'll probably spend the day wandering around Yanaka in a semi-zombified state.

The Projects

As well as taking a copious number of photos, I've set myself some extra assignments for this holiday. I want to make some decent videos again and I'm also hoping to use my cool little Zoom audio recorder to capture some nice ambient background sounds to add a bit more depth and context to some of my photography. The Japanese can be surprisingly shy when they see a tourist with a camera so I'm hoping to capture some soundscapes for places where it's less practical to shoot video.
