WEEEEEE SUUUUCK!!!!!!

The Chargers will have to wait until November for their first road win as they fell 17-20 vs teh St Louis Rams.

Trailing 17-0 in the first half, San Diego mounted a comeback attempt that reached Rams territory trailing by a touchdown, but the Chargers never broke through, falling to 0-4 on the road at the Edwards Jones Dome on Sunday.

“We’re a 2-4 football team,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “I don’t know that it has anything to do with the road. We didn’t play well enough to win today. We have a lot of work to do to become the type of football team that we want to be.”

Nate Kaeding slipped on a 49-yard field goal attempt and Houston sustained their first big drive of the second half as the game clock seemed to vaporize.

Josh Brown drilled a 48-yard field goal with 3:58 left and St. Louis held for a 20-17 win.

The Chargers (2-4) never got a last attempt at a tie or win, unlike the other three losses. Buster Davis caught a five-yard touchdown pass with 3:18 left, getting San Diego within a field goal, but Steven Jackson converted a third-and-6 with more than two minutes left and the Rams (3-3) drained the remaining seconds off the clock.

It was a different kind of disappointment Sunday.

After an 0-3 start on the road fraught with turnovers and special teams miscues that disabled strong showings by the offense and defense, San Diego fell behind the Rams, 17-0, in the first half Sunday because St. Louis moved the ball effectively and piled pressure on Philip Rivers.

“Up until this game, I think everyone identified what those areas were. We turned the ball over and (made mistakes) in the kicking game,” Turner said. “Today I think that was different. They were able to move the ball and keep the ball and we weren’t able to do that in the first half. I’ve not lost faith in this group but we have a lot of work to do. “

But with another obstacle appearing, the Chargers appeared to slam on the brakes with a suffocating defensive effort during the third quarter in contrast to the opening half.

Rookie quarterback Sam Bradford threw for 172 yards before halftime and completed 6-of-8 passes on the third scoring drive, which pinned the Chargers to its second 17-0 road deficit of the season.

The Rams, which sacked Rivers five times in the first half, converted third-and-17, third-and-9 and third-and-1 on consecutive sequences. St. Louis couldn’t score on third-and-goal from the 13, but a roughing-the-passer penalty extended the drive. Two plays later, Jackson skittered up the middle for a seven-yard touchdown that gave the Rams a 17-0 lead with 1:39 left in the first half.

That added to the deficit created by a 39-yard Josh Brown field goal and a 38-yard touchdown pass to rookie Danario Alexander.

A 42-yard Danny Amendola punt return set up the Rams near midfield before St. Louis the field goal.

Jackson topped 100 yards rushing on the final drive, which ended with three kneel-downs for Bradford.

Patrick Crayton, playing in place of Legedu Naanee, caught six passes for 117 yards in the loss.

A 28-yard strike to Crayton led to a 41-yard Kaeding field goal that gave the Chargers points before halftime.

Crayton caught two more passes on San Diego’s first touchdown drive of the game, teeing up a 1-yard jaunt into the end zone for Mike Tolbert that drew the Chargers within 17-10.

All four of San Diego’s losses have come in one-possession road game. The Chargers trailed by two scores before getting points on the board in three of those games.

“Guys made plays when the opportunity presented itself for their offense and you have to respect what (the Rams) did,” Stephen Cooper said. “We weren’t out there loose and having fun like we’re used to having.”
