Got a job at a psych hospital in the adolescent dual diagnosis unit. It was terrifying and I didn't even last the 2 weeks of orientation.
Got a job at a skilled nursing long term care facility aka a nursing home. It's the largest nursing home in Massachusetts and houses 300 and somethin residents. I work night shift 11pm-7am and am in charge of 42 patients. It's rough, but at least the workload is not quite as insane as it'd be in the morning. I'm still kept very busy with medication passes, treatments and suppositories to shove up people's buttholes... you have no idea how important bowel movements are in the elderly population. heh I like to creep Tim out with my suppository finger. "This finger was in 3 buttholes tonight!", I'll declare while touching him with it as he tries to run away.
There's a nurse at work who makes gourmet cupcakes every Sunday for everyone. She is like obsessed with cupcakes it's so awesome. She started a new game called, "What's the secret ingredient?" where we have to uhh guess the secret ingredient (duh) in the featured cupcake of the week. The winner gets a dozen cupcakes of a flavor of their choice. So far I've sampled a strawberry hazelnut cupcake, a triple chocolate almond surprise cupcake, and a "Ruby, Sweet and Sassy" cupcake. The strawberry hazelnut one had balsamic vinegar in it as the secret ingredient. She marinated the strawberries in it and then macerated them into a pulp with the batter. Then she grounded up the hazelnuts into a flour to add to the mix. She then injected each cupcake with a filling and then frosted the tops. HOLY HELL are these things GOOD! They are hands down the best cupcakes I've ever had. It makes having to work on Sundays worthwhile. Okie anyway the triple chocolate almond cupcake's secret ingredient was cherry pie filling, which was mixed into the batter. I just had the Ruby Sweet and Sassy cupcake today so I dunno what the secret ingredients are fer sure, but this one had 3. I guessed Ruby Red Grapefruit, brown sugar, and nutmeg. The grapefruit I'm fairly certain of because the injected filling had pulp in it and it tasted to me like grapefruit. I could go on and on about these cupcakes. She really should open her own shop in Boston or something.
I finally have an interview with a freaking hospital. It's the closest one to me which is very nice. They called me about interviewing for a new program they started for new grads to be trained in their Intensive Care Unit. They are only going to accept 4 people so I don't want to get my hopes up, but I really feel like I should get out of this nursing home. I'm really nervous about the interview. Interviews are such bullshit. I can't think of a time when people are more fake....maybe like during a car dealership sale? heh
As much as I want to get into the hospitals and develop my skills in nursing, I also sooo don't want to do it and the idea terrifies me. Nursing can be so stressful. It's a crazy juggling act between dealing with patients, their families, doctors (some of whom can be purposefully intimidating and total assholes), Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietary Consults, Social Services, labs, meds, treatments, charting, coworkers, patient care assistants blah blah blah. It seems so overwhelming and I know it's something that has to be learned with time, but uggggh it's like you really can't afford to have an off or lazy day in this field cuz it could cost a patient's life or your nursing license or both.
Can't I just like sit here and knit and make money? No?.....ok.
