I went on my first solo road ride on my dirtbike today. Just armored up, hopped on, and went. It was heavenly... ~sigh~
I can't believe how wonderful it is to have my bike with me, instead of having to make plans to meet my parents to go for a ride.
I was out in the middle of nowhere, on rambling roads with next to no traffic. I passed a few cars and a couple of bikes going the other way, but only had someone come up behind me once in the entire ride.
Riding is so peaceful. In some ways you have to be hyper aware - of what you're doing, of road conditions, of other drivers. But in some ways you just ARE. You focus so much on what's going on around you RIGHT NOW that you don't think or worry about anything else hardly at all. It's that Zen thing - just BE. Be in the moment. Enjoy what's happening right here and now, without even remembering anything good or bad that happened in the past or might happen in the future.
I know I've written this before. But every time I ride I re-discover this, and how wonderful it is. Usually I can't shut my mind off for even a minute. To shut it off for an entire hour is so peaceful. I actually had planned on riding for an hour and a half to two hours, but I saw evil, dark storm clouds approaching and called it quits after only an hour. Still, it was a lovely ride!
Hmmm... I wonder when I can go again...
