Optimal Protein Intake for the average American:
Method 1: Convert weight in lbs. to weight in Kgs: ( # lbs. / 2.2 ). Multiply result by 0.8.
The resulting number is an estimate of the recommended number of grams/protein that should be consumed per day.
Method 2 (This is the most accurate method, but most difficult to figure): Multiply the # of calories consumed per day by 12% (0.12). The resulting number is the number of calories of protein that should be consumed per day. To convert that number to grams, divide by 4.
* This method should only be used when the calories consumed *maintains* body weight; it is not applicable to caloric intake when you are on a diet, whether that diet be that dumbass “Grapefruit Diet” or my personal fave, the “Twinkie -n- Pie Diet.”
(adapted from my Nutrition and Health text - the bit about Twinkie -n- Pie diets was not in the original edition, although I can't imagine why.)
