Absolutely. Last season, Sam was the one with a purpose, who was chomping at the bit, ready to find Papa Winchester and get on with the killing of the Ceiling Demon. This season, it's Dean who has the mission, even if it's a lot more vague. Especially after Crossroad Blues, now that he has some kind of evidence that John did make the deal, at it was at the cost of his soul. That would weigh heavily on anyone. (demonstrated when he's yelling at the dude who traded himself for his wife; 'think she'd agree with that? she's the one who has to live without you now', etc. )
That insensitivity comes with being a younger sibling, I think. Because Dean, as an older brother, is supposed to be able to handle things. While Sam acknowledges that Dean obviously isn't handling John's death well, that's a Very Big Thing that no one can miss. When it comes to the little things, comments and actions that are far more hurtful than he realizes, Sam doesn't even notice. Because Dean is Dean, and his Big Brother, and it goes with the territory.
I'm glad you liked it, by the way. It seems to be the only way I actually write anymore, other than meta-ing and shell-ing with Chant. So if you have a five things or whatever from the SPN 'verse you want to see, lay it on me.
