BSG Mini-Series Script Commentary

Oct 07, 2009 10:09

So I managed to get my hands on the mini-series script, what's clearly a draft of what we eventually got, and felt compelled to write commentary. I mean it confirms my opinion that RDM writes some truly crappy dialogue at times there is some serious "Well, as you know, Bob" going on, a few interesting scene changes, some major character differences ( Read more... )

I've read this before (a few times, heh) but I also re-read it this morning. It's really striking how much better (I think) the finished miniseries is versus this script, even though it's mostly smaller changes. There definitely is a lot of telling rather than showing here.

There's a description in there somewhere of Tyrol being in his mid-30s, which is funny cause AD looks so very young in the mini.

I'm so glad someone decided they should hold the Zak/Adama/Kara stuff for Act of Contrition instead. There's also a big change there about Kara's confession, but I'll talk about that when you review part two. ;)

That whole Hand of God sequence with Lee--I think would have given us a bit different picture of him. It's far more action-hero than we get in the mini. Oh and there's a hilarious stage direction in part two when he and Kara reunite that sorta cracked me up. But I'll wait on that too. Heh.

There's an interesting change to the Kara/Tigh scene at the close also.

The Paul/Saul thing was a copyright issue. Legal wouldn't let them call him Paul for some kind of infringement problem. And the dark hair for Six is interesting in light of Katee and Tricia's comments about their hair in their recent vidblog. Katee thought it was pretty cliche that sci-fi heroines are usually with the short blonde hair.

The Telling not Showing bothers the crap out of me, really.

I'm looking forward to reading Part 2. That's... a really weird thing to copyright.

Yeah, copyright is the wrong word (I was just being lazy and didn't feel like fixing. You can't copyright a name.). More the infringement issue as I guess there was already a Paul Tigh happening somewhere.

Part two has some interesting and distinct changes. (Far less Leoben I think, which is one thing I heartily approve of. ;) Denys Illic just took some new photos of him by the way and they're on his facebook page.

Heh.. I will let Aria know.

Like every time she's seen me since I started the commentary she's been all "Did you get to Leoben yet!?"
