Madoka Magica Movies
So I finally saw the Madoka Magica movies.
GUYS. GUYS. That was so visually lush I feel like all this eye candy is going to give me diabetes. Everything was so intricately animated! The transformation scenes were a hundred times more awesome! And the fights were amazing...
The script has been retooled for the better, so much so that Madoka almost reads like a whole new character. Where we had to rely a lot on her actions in the anime, here she actually voices her thoughts, sides with Homura a whole lot and is generally more forceful. A good example is actually this really spoilery scene, which I'll hide under a cut.
When Madoka says she will become a magic girl, the one in the anime was more about Madoka's choice, and that Homura just had to trust her.
This is the new exchange which I copied down -
Madoka: Homura.. I'm sorry. I'm going to become a magic girl
Homura: Madoka... no...
Madoka: I finally figured it out. I found a wish that I truly want granted. So I'm going to use my life for it, okay?
Homura: Don't! Because then.. Because then, what I have I.. been fighting for? *cries*
Madoka: Sorry. I'm really sorry. But I believe it's because you've protected me for so, so long, that I am the person I am now. I'm really so sorry. Won't you believe in the answer that the one you've protected all this time has found? I swear I won't waste everything that you've done for me, Homura.
*SCREAMS INTO HANDS* HOW PERFECT IS THAT EXCHANGE. One, it acknowledges that Madoka is GIVING UP HER LIFE. Second, it acknowledges that HOMURA DID SUCCEED IN PROTECTING MADOKA. It was because Homura protected her that Madoka had the chance to make a good wish that she was happy with. Third, Madoka actually ASKS HOMURA TO TRUST HER, because MADOKA IS THE ONE THAT HOMURA HAS PROTECTED ALL THIS TIME. It shows that this is not only a relationship that goes both ways, but Madoka can push back and not let herself be turned into a doormat!!!
Now this is some MadoHomu I can get behind.
I am amused that this time, for the floating in space scene Madoka and Homura get dresses made of starlight. It is very pretty and now makes me imagine all the magic girls in dresses of starlight. The dresses even look a little like the ones that were in the opening.
Another note - I want to get the new Connect opening with Homura in the glasses.
Given the tone of this movie, I am now side-eyeing the third movie trailer very hard. Surely the creators know better than to undo their own themes? Then again, see: Macross Frontier. I'm just hoping that my personal pet theory is what is happening in that trailer. Hint: My personal theory has to do with Homura's witch.
