“River, Zoe’s locked an’ loaded and threatenin’ to start shootin’ if we don’t get goin’ into town ‘like now’!” Kaylee called through her door.  “She wants me to make sure we ain’t gonna be late gettin’ her to the flickers.  Can I come in?”

“Certainly,” River answered, trying to do up the back of her dress without catching her hair in the zipper.  “I ( Read more... )

I just read the whole story - up to this part, anyway! - in one sitting, and I'm afraid there is simply nothing for me to do but leap upon you and nom your head until more of the story comes out. Undignified, of course, but the thing must be done.

*leap*

Is it working yet? When does the next installment of glorious, kitsch-rich fic-crackery emerge? It's the weekend here, I can do this *all* day...

Ahhhhh! Dyce be chomping on my brain!

The crackery will return on Tuesday when Inara, River and a certain someone take a trip into the City - watch Jayne try to be smooth and fail miserably...

Oh, I can hardly wait! Jayne trying to be smooth... oh, that's going to be worth seeing.

Is there any chance I can bribe you for bigger and faster updates? I got some Prodigal up my sleeve...

It's the classic case of quality vs. quantity...

If you want quality, I have to write this at the pace I write it, simply because there's a lot more going on in this story than meets the eye. We're talking plots within plots, all of it needing careful engineering.

If you want quantity, I can produce an outline of the plot for you to read...but you'd be sworn to secrecy.

As for the amount - after the story is done, I'm going to pen some meta-narratives (basically "deleted scenes") that had to be cut due to length. LJ has a limit per post and it forces me to be economical with my words, which is probably a good thing, given my penchant for keyboard diarrhea...:D

Yay more Prodigal!!!

Well, darnit, if you're going to be all logical...

Write at whatever pace works best for you. I tend to do fits and starts - four thousand words one day, maybe six hundred the next, then nothing for a few, then another couple of thousand. I will wait (im)patiently for the next installment until you get it just how you want it... but it won't be easy. Your Young Jayne is more hard-edged than most I've seen, realistically foul-mouthed and lecherous but with the softer underbelly that makes Adult Jayne so appealing much more accessible in his adolescent self.

Also, little Zoe and Wash are the Cutest. Thing. Ever.

As long as I can pump out at least 3,000 - 4,000 quality words per session, I'm good. And then there's the editing! Oh, God, the editing! Foreshadowing to set up, red herrings to drag across the path as well as the occasional running joke to keep up with - it's a wonder I have hair left!!!

Thank you for your compliments on my flavor of Jayne!

I looked at all the possible ways to write him and ended up with an amalgamation of Firefly / Serenity Jayne Cobb with spices of Cort Foster from the prompt material to make him fit into the AU.

Wash and Zoe are the most perfect example of lasting love that I've seen in a series - competent, common-sensical human beings who recognize their counterpoint in each other. How could I not make them the Little Damn Scene-Stealers here? :D
