women achieving greatness (the lack thereof)

talked more about this trend last night. unfortunately, it's impossible to conduct a broad longitudinal research project during the course of a drinking session, but that didn't stop the three of us from making generalizations based on our personal experiences to explain why women aren't achieving "greatness".

for instance, all three of us have been in bands, but my motivation and feelings about the experience were very different from my male friends'. i didn't start a band on my own. i was invited to join a band, but even then i felt insecure because i thought i needed to be as good as, if not better, than the guys in order to hold my own. my friends didn't really worry about being the best, they just got out there and did it.

what drives guys to form bands, play shows, and record albums, even when they have no previous musical experience or talent? and meanwhile, what are girls doing when teenage guys decide to start forming garage bands? almost every girl i knew growing up had taken music leasons. they know how to play music, but where are the girl garage bands? where is the female equivalent to The Beatles?

please share any insights you have. i'm curious.
