So I got this terrifically shitty Rock Band knock-off game. It was on the discount rack at Walmart.
Power Gig: Rise of the Six String.
1. It has an attempt at plot. It's ridiculously campy and dystopian. Sadly, I can't skip past the FMVs. Look, I really don't care.
2. The PCs have different special powers that augment game play. I'm a fan. You don't make your own bands or characters due to the ~plotline.~
3. My RB peripherals are compatible, yes. The mic works fine. The guitar is fine. THE DRUMSET IS KILLING ME SLOWLY. It is slow and miserable going trying to get it calibrate. This is because Power Gig doesn't use a drum set. It uses
this stuff. There's no banging. So there are understandably some kind of hiccups to get past. My scores would be so much better, though, if for some reason the game didn't hate my red pad. :(
4.
THE PLAYLIST IS FREAKING AWESOME. For this I forgive almost everything. I love the game play of RB sooooo muuuuch beeeetter, but ugh, the RB2 playlist blows enormous bloody chunks. RB1 is good stuff but Kellie has my game, and I haven't gotten RB3 yet. I applaud RB's inclusion of older music, and venturing a little past the rock genre, but that's not what I want to play. The PG playlist would be fucking awesome if I could keep the artists but switch some songs. Diary of Jane instead of Breath; So What I Lied instead of You're Going Down; little things like that.
However. YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR KID. YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR KID. YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR KID. ...YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR KID. DID I MENTION YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR KID.
5. Gameplay. So much harder. Partially because of the quality, but mostly it's just freaking harder. There are no grids. You're basically on your own with subdividing. There are little beat markers to the side. That's it. The background is transparent, so sometimes the notes blend in. They also change colors sometimes. Calibrating it is a bitch with the RB peripherals. There are like 7 levels; I'm only on the fourth on drums, my strongest. And I (mostly) play expert on RB. I'm sure I could bump it up a notch and do fine, but focusing on the calibration and dealing with the game's issue with my red pad keeps me down. However, there is no fail. You only get rewarded, not punished. They reward for perfect hits and okay hits. I'm not always entirely sure what line I'm playing on any instrument--it's not as perfectly mirrored as RB is, but that could change the higher up in the difficulty levels I get. The vocals are insanely sensitive and precise, but I can get behind that.
So overall, I'm thinking it's not bad. I certainly prefer working on this to playing RB2 and that boring playlist. I may have to go through Platinum Blonde Life six times in a row tweaking calibration values, but at least I like that song. And despite issues, I am making progress in the game and toward unlocking You're Gonna Go Far Kid. So.
I love being bored.
Mod ideas, because for the sake of my red pad and pride I need to hit harder:
mouse pads
rubber bands
felt
sweatshirts
cardboard
socks
going stick-less
ah, mods.
