Silver and Gold
Queen Serenity watched as the Prince of Earth swirled her daughter around the dance floor and then dipped her. Her lips quirked slightly as she watched Princess Serenity artistically relax into the move, completely trusting her partner to both hold and protect her. That trace of a smile vanished though, as the pose brought to mind death scenes and grieving lovers.
As Prince Endymion drew the princess back up, the queen tried to shake off the feeling of dark foreboding. There was nothing she could do except support the couple, no matter how ill-fated their romance might be. She still hoped that it would be short lived, a quick teenager affair, but something in their expressions when they looked at each other told her that it was not. Her brother, Prince Helios, and his wife used to look at each other that way, and nothing but death had been able to separate them.
Across the room, she saw Princess Aphrodite dancing with a white haired man that she did not recognize. She recognized the taste of his power, however, and wondered how many other Earthlings had managed to come to Moon with their prince.
"Silver and gold," she heard Luna say from somewhere close to her left ankle. She turned to look curiously as the dark cat. "Chancey combination, that. In some cultures, it is considered to be unlucky."
Queen Serenity hummed thoughtfully as she turned her gaze back to the dance floor. This time, she shifted her sight so that she could see the dancers' power auras as well as their bodies. Luna's comment had triggered a curious thought. Her silver eyes narrowed slightly as she watched the streams of silver and gold float around the room. The silver strands came from her daughter and the white haired gentleman that Princess Aphrodite was dancing with, while the gold came from Princess Aphrodite and Prince Endymion. They were different shades, the visitors from Earth having darker auras than those who belonged to Moon.
"I wonder if that is where the legend of the old taboo came from," she wondered softly. Her eyes grazed around the room and identified three more darker auras. "The chanciness of silver and gold transforming into a taboo against the people of Earth interacting with the people of Moon."
Luna gave her a startled look. "Maybe," she acknowledged thoughtfully.
"But if it is just chanciness," the white haired queen continued, "then maybe... There is hope for good luck as opposed to bad." Her comment sounded more like a question.
"Maybe," Luna said again as she turned her gaze back to the dance floor. "But there is more at work here than luck. There is tradition and fear and distrust. It will make a difficult task harder."
Queen Serenity nodded slightly. The Ambassador of Mau had a very good point. As she watched the dancers, she sent up a prayer for the children of silver and gold: the innocent lovers who would pay the most if luck was not enough.
