Cats Rule
"My cat is, too, better than your dog," An told the irritating boy as she stood in the sandbox and hugged her fat blue cat tightly to her chest. Rhett Butler looked curiously at the scruffy looking mutt panting outside the sandbox to whom he was being compared. The dog was a mongrel with the bushy golden coat of a retriever, but the curls of a poodle, the nose of a schnauzer, and the ears of a spaniel. Unfortunately, for all the intelligent breeds that appeared to be in his background his eyes were quite vacuous.
"For-get it," the little boy replied as he crossed his arms and turned his nose up and to the side. "Ain't no way any cat's as smart as a dog."
Rhett struggled to breath as An's arms tightened around him. "Rhett Butler can do anything your dog can do!"
"Prove it," the boy said suddenly. He turned back to face her with a smirking grin on his face.
An and Rhett Butler stared at him a moment. "How?" she finally asked.
"I challenge you!" the boy exclaimed loudly as he jumped in the air. He came down so that he was standing sideways, one grubby finger pointed at them. "A series of... of... commands that both your stupid cat and my smart dog have to do. The one who gets the most right, wins."
An's face tightened as she considered the challenge. "Done," she agreed with a short nod. Carefully, she put Rhett Butler down on the sand. "The first one will be..."
"Fetch!" the boy shouted. When An blinked at him, he laughed. "Give up already?"
"As if," she muttered as she shook her head. "What are they going to fetch? It can't be something too big or too small."
The boy blinked at her, stumped. He had expected her to cave in instantly. After all, no cat would fetch anything. "Um..." His eyes darted around the playground. "Ah! That stick!" He scampered across the yard and picked up a small stick. His dog's eyes immediately lit up.
"See the stick, boy? See the stick? Go get it! Go get the stick!" the boy cried as he gave the stick a mighty heave. Rhett Butler and An watched as the stick flew out of the playground and into the nearby road. "Wa... Wait!" the boy cried as the dog took off after it. "Wait, Wilkes!" The dog ignored him, dashing happily into the street, picking up the stick, and returning to his ashen master. Blaring it's horn, a truck rushed through the intersection just after Wilkes cleared it. An held a hand to her pounding heart as she watched the dog race up to the shaking boy.
"Goo... Good boy, Wilkes," the boy said as he stretched out a trembling hand. "Now give... Give..." The dog tugged back on the stick as his master tried to pull it out of his mouth. "Give. Wilkes, give!" the boy ordered, embarrassment and anger making him forget his scare. "I said..." His voice broke off as Wilkes suddenly let go of the stick and he fell to the ground. "...give..." Heroically, An hid a smile. It vanished as the boy held the stick up to her. "Here."
"Oh no..." she said with a look of distaste. "It has dog slobber all over it. I'll go get a new one." Keeping one eye on Rhett Butler, who had developed a tendency lately to wander off, she stepped out of the sandbox and found another stick.
"Oh, Rhe-ett..." she cooed as she waggled it at the fat cat. "Rhe-ett... Come on, boy. Come get the stick."
"He has to fetch it, not come get it," the boy said in disgust as he began to wrestle with his dog.
"He will," An replied haughtily. Rhett slowly pushed himself to his feet and began to walk towards her. "He just has to smell it first." She waited patiently while Rhett Butler waddled his way over to her and sniffed the stick. "Okay, boy, go fetch it," she cried as she gave it a light throw further into the playground. She and her challenger watched as Rhett Butler sat down and watched it fly. "Go on," she encouraged. "Go fetch the stick."
The boy threw his arms around Wilkes' neck and began to roar with laughter. Rhett Butler looked at him for a long moment, and then at An. "Please?" she asked prettily. Slowly, he pushed his way back to his feet once more and began to walk away.
"Oh-ho-ho-ho... I told you dogs were smarter than cats! He doesn't even know how to play fetch! Ha-ha-ha-HA-ha-ha. Admit it! You were wrong. Your dumb ol' cat is just a big, fat..." His voice trailed off and his eyes widened as he watched Rhett Butler slowly drag the stick back to his mistress. "A big, fat..."
"Good boy," An crooned as Rhett dropped the stick at her feet and began to wash a paw. She squatted down and smoothed her small hand over his head several times. "Good Rhett, good boy..."
"O...Okay," the boy said as he struggled to regain his superior tone. "Well, I bet he can't sit!" An merely looked at him. "Come on, Wilkes. Sit. Sit, boy." Wilkes pranced around his master, obviously looking for the next toss in the game of fetch. "Sit down!" the boy growled in exasperation as he tried to push the dog's hindquarters towards the earth. Wilkes just slipped away from him. "Gah..."
The boy picked up the stick and held it up in the air. "Si-i-i-it..." he said slowly. "Ah-ah-ah," he scolded as the dog tried to jump up. "Sit. Si-i-i-it..." Finally, after several long moments of coaxing, Wilkes finally sat. "There!" the boy exclaimed as he turned to look at An.
She merely looked back at him, and then down at Rhett Butler who had sat back down long ago with no prompting on her part. "No, that's cheating!" the boy grumbled. "You have to make him stand up first and then order him to sit!"
An sighed, but leaned over to pick Rhett Butler up and put him on his feet. "Sit, Rhett Butler," she said as she let him go. Rhett Butler stayed standing for a long moment, and then settled back down with a sigh.
"Well... I bet you can't make him beg!" the boy exclaimed with a frown. And so it went, from begging to shaking hands to speaking to Rhett Butler's favorite position of laying they cycled through the standard dog tricks. While it was beneath his cat dignity to perform all of them on command, the thought of looking bad in front of such a silly dog was even worse.
Finally came the biggest test of all. "Okay, last one!" the boy exclaimed. Although he tried to act as energetic and superior as before, he was somewhat disheartened by the blue cat's success. As An looked at him impatiently, he smiled. "Stay." An winced, and he knew that he had her. "Yep, the last command will be stay. Whichever one moves first without permission looses."
An swallowed, but nodded agreement. "You hear that, Rhett Butler?" she asked as she leaned down and petted him again. "You have to stay. Don't go loosing to that silly old dog now!"
"Ready?" the boy called. An nodded. "Stay!" they ordered simultaneously. The two animals looked at their masters, Wilkes with his usual good cheer and Rhett Butler with his usual stoicism. Slowly, the two children moved away from the animals. "Sta-a-ay..." they chorused as they backed up. "Sta-a-a-a-ay..."
"A-an-n-n..." they heard a voice call faintly. Rhett Butler turned to look towards the apartment. "A-an-n-n... It's time to come home!"
"Coming, Mama!" the little girl called.
"You can't go now!" the little boy exclaimed. "We have to wait and see who wins!"
"But, my Mama is calling me."
"It won't take long. Any minute now, your fat cat is going to move and I'm going to win." An glared at him and crossed her arms in a huff. They waited patiently for another long minute.
"A-an-n-n! It's dinner time!"
Rhett Butler's ears perked up at that, and he slowly pushed his way to his feet. Before he could take a step, however, a golden blur passed him. "No-o-o-o-o-o..." the little boy wailed as he began to run. "Wi-ilkes! Come back here! You stupid dog! We almost won! That's not our dinner!"
An laughed as she picked up her cat and began to carry him home. She'd always known her pet was smart, but now she had proof! "Good boy," she murmured as she trotted along. "I'll tell Mama to give you some extra cream tonight." Rhett Butler licked his lips and began to purr.
