Loitering
Inspired by the Herman Hermits "Leaning on a Lamp Post"
"I'm leaning on a lamp post at the corner of the street
In case a certain little lady comes by."
The shop owners glanced over at the strikingly noticeable man leaning against the lamp post. He seemed to be waiting on some one, but periodically checked out the shops around him. Normally, a guy casing out the jewelry display while appearing to wait on some one wouldn't bother the owner, but this was not a normal time. There had been a rash of break ins in the area the last two weeks. The thieves knew their way around the store and the area, and knew exactly what they were looking for. Picking up the phone, he called the local precinct. It was always better to be safe than sorry.
Haruka tilted her head back a bit so that she could see further down the sidewalk. Michiru would stand out no matter how far away she was. 'Not here yet. She should be here soon. She said that they just let out.' She felt her eyes pulled back toward the jewelry shop window. There was a necklace that she wanted to see if Michiru liked. The blue enameled dolphin leapt gracefully towards the silver chain as it was nestled against the dark velvet. The dark stone that made its eye seemed to be looking at her as well. Her eyes drifted over the crowded sidewalk, looking for bright sea green hair. Instead she spotted a group policemen working their way through the crowd. They seemed intent to getting to the spot where she was standing. When they were almost to her, they split up, some heading into the nearby stores, and one heading towards her.
Officer Suki caught the store owner's attention. "The man with the blonde hair?"
The owner nodded. "I normally wouldn't worry, but he keeps looking over at the window. It is like he wants something."
Suki smiled half heartedly. "Normally not a bad thing..."
"True, but nowadays, you can't be too sure."
"We'll wait here to see what happens."
The owner's relieved face made it worth the trip.
Officer Seki approached the tall blonde man. "Excuse me."
Haruka cast one last glance over the crowd before turning her attention to the officer. "Yes, officer, can I help you?"
"Why are you loitering here?" Seki was sure that he was being to blunt, but those blue eyes were trying to pierce through him. This man was not the least worried about being talked to by the police. 'That can be a good thing, or a bad one. And it is my job to decipher which it is.'
Haruka didn't let her surprise show. 'The police in this area are normally more polite. I wonder what has been going on to make them gruff. And where are the other two that were with him earlier?' She settled back against the lamp post. "I'm waiting for a certain little lady to come by. She is sure to get here soon."
"Your waiting on lady? On a street corner?" Seki cast a glance at the thick crowd. "There are easier places to meet up. Ones that are less crowded."
Haruka nodded in agreement. "There are, but she is trying to get away from work. She can't always do so, but she'll try and this is the closest shopping district to her job."
Seki nodded slightly. Somehow he believed this man. "I am going to have to ask you not to stay here. You need to set up another meeting."
Haruka nodded. Something had to be up. Then she felt an arm slip through hers. Looking down, she smiled into the bright eyes looking up into hers.
Michiru smiled up at Haruka. "Getting into trouble?"
"Not yet. Glad you made it. How much time do we have?"
"Thirty minutes, and then I have to get back."
Nodding slightly, Haruka turned back to the officer. "And she made it. This is the lady I was waiting for. Next time I set up a different meeting spot, you're right this one is a bit to crowded." Tugging slightly at Michiru's arm, she headed for the jewelry display.
Seki felt himself tense up. They were heading for the jewelry store. A voice nearby caught his attention.
"Hey... isn't that Haruka Ten'oh and Michiru Kaioh?"
"Yeah, it is. I guess the rumor that they are a couple is true."
"Wow... should we try to get their autographs?"
Seki focused on to the couple as they peered into the window at the display. The glass reflected their faced back to him. 'It really is Ten'oh. I don't know Michiru Kaioh, but that really is Haruka Ten'oh. Setting his worried aside, he headed to a less crowded area to call this into the other officers. He needed to let them know that they could relax their guard.
Michiru glanced at the necklace that Haruka pointed out to her. "So, what did you do?"
"Nothing. I was waiting for you, and this necklace caught my attention. So I divided my time between looking for you and looking at it."
Michiru shook her head. "That is what you did wrong. There has been a string of break ins in the area."
"And they thought I was casing the place out?" Haruka almost laughed. "We'll to soothe their nerves, shall be purchase something?"
Michiru nodded. "The dolphin necklace will be perfect."
As they enter the shop, Seki reported to the other officers that all was clear. "That is unless you count the possibility that those two might be mobbed by fans inside the store."
