A deal
Ikuko watched as both of her children headed off to school. The eldest was running at top speed while the youngest was practically strolling. It was just another normal day. She glanced down at the black cat the was by her feet. 'I'm sure she is also watching them leave. It is almost as if she is worried too.' Stepping back into the house, she started to shut the door. "Come on Luna, it is time to start on the chores."
Luna glanced over at the mother of her princess. She watched as Ikuko glanced at the clear sky with a worried frown on her face. It was the same direction she was worried about. 'I know that she is Usagi's mother, she isn't the Queen, but sometimes I wonder if a bit of the Queen isn't in her.' She looked back out at the clear blue sky wondering where this sense of impending doom came from. She gave a slight cry of surprise as a hand wrapped its way about her chest and scooped her up.
Ikuko cuddle the cat close to her chest, both of them staring out into the morning sky. "You mother her as well, don't you? Both of us worried over the unknown." Stepping in, she shut the door behind her. "But, we have to be strong enough to let her face her own problems. I can still protect Shingo, but..."
Luna felt the arms that were cuddling her close tighten as Ikuko laid her head against the top of hers. Luna twitched her whiskers as blue hair tickled them.
"She has to try out her own wings. We... we have nurtured her, given her a safe place to let them grow. But now... now..." Bright blue eyes looked out the window towards a row of apartment buildings. "Now she must fledge them. We have to give her room to fly. No matter what we want, no matter how much we want to hover over her. That is what they say." Scratching Luna between the ears, she headed back towards the kitchen.
Setting the cat down on the floor, she gave her confidant one last firm stroke. "But they don't know my girl. She is a wonderful sweet child who will find every piece of trouble out there."
Luna sat and wrapped her tail about her feet. 'And then, Usagi would run screaming.'
Ikuko tied her hair back and started cleaning off the table. "And then, she will try and save everyone. Just like she always has." She placed the dishes into the sink and started the water. "You haven't been with us long enough to know her like I do, Luna. Before, when she was just learning to use her wings, she would try and solve everyone's problem. She would try and protect all that she was capable of, and sometimes... many times... more than that. But they tell me I am supposed to let her go."
Luna gazed into the worried face that was staring into the soapy dish water. 'I wish I could tell her. I wish I could comfort her. Usagi... Usagi is capable of far more than most people. That Usagi has protected this entire world. But...' She dropped her head, her eyes focused on the tile at her feet. 'But not even Usagi knows that anymore. No-one does. Only Artemis and myself. Every since she defeated Beryl...every since time was shifted... no one knows.' A gentle hand brushed between her ears.
"I'm sorry Luna. I know, you have enough worries. You watch over her as close as I do, and I know you understand what I am talking about. I just needed to tell some one, and it seems you are it."
Luna twitched her ears. 'A confidant again. But this time I can't give advice. Not to either of them.' She pushed her head slightly into the gentle hand, tying to give as much comfort as she could.
Ikuko smiled as Luna petted her back. 'That is what I call it. She understands me. She knows what is going on, and she is trying to comfort me as much as I am trying to comfort her.' Her eyes trailed back out the window, towards the row of apartment complexes. "Something is about to happen Luna. Something... I'm not sure if it is good or bad, but something is about to happen. And every part of my Mother's intuition says that Usagi is going to be involved."
Luna looked up into the worried eyes above her head. 'A mother's intuition eh? I feel it, too. Something is about to happen.'
"Watch over her when I can't,okay, Luna? She will accept you hovering, but not me anymore. I have to watch from the background, but you be there with her. Listen to her, and help her in any way that you can. I'll make sure that there is a safe haven for her and you, and you make sure she can get here. Okay?"
'Making deals with a cat... she must be worried.' Luna wrapped her paw around Ikuko's hand the best she could. 'But she trusts me. She trusts me to bring Usagi home. It is a deal Ikuko. I will do my best to make sure she arrives here safe. I will do all I have to do to make sure that Usagi can face what ever is coming.' "Meow."
That one cry helped move an enormous weight off her shoulders. Ikuko looked into the bright blue eyes that were as intelligent as any she had ever seen. They had a deal.
