High in the eastern spire of the Crystal Palace, Lady stirred restlessly in her sleep. The darkness hid the faint frown on her face as she shifted under the gossamer light sheets. Far in the east, hidden from her view, the thin sliver of the brand new moon's crescent crept into view over the horizon.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
In her dreams, Lady stared at the dense foliage of a tropical rain forest. The air was close and heavy, so filled with humidity that it was hard to breathe. The smell of rotting vegetation and warm growing plants surrounded her, and in the distant canopy she could hear a chorus of bird and animal calls. It never occurred to her to wonder why she was dressed in a Juuban High School winter uniform. Despite the long sleeves and the obvious heat around her, however, she did not feel uncomfortable.
Slowly, she turned around. This place seemed familiar somehow. The sounds, the smells,... even the shape of the shadows.
The sight of a crumbling stone wall drew her thoughts away from the sense of deja vu. Her pink eyes widened a little as she studied the carving in front of her. It was still crisp and sharp despite the age of the wall it embellished.
A large, feathered snake twisted and twined its way along a squarish path around a circle of pock marks. She reached slowly for one of the larger, slightly oblong shaped holes in the middle of the design, frowning again. Something was missing. Something was supposed to be in the hole, something important.
As her fingers brushed the crumbling rock, the bass relief serpent began to shimmer and move. Lady jumped back, startled, and watched wide eyed as the snake crept down the side of the wall and onto the forest floor. As it touched the dark, dank earth, its feathers smoothed and twined around themselves transforming into rainbow colored scales.
'Ssso... It issss time...' a voice hissed. At the sound, the birds and animals immediately fell silent. Lady stepped back again as the large snake reared up on its coils and stared at her with its reptilian yellow-green eyes level with her pink ones. It flicked its tongue at her. 'Sssso hesssitant, Tlalli Iyollo,' the voice hissed, sounding amused.
Lady opened her mouth to reply, and then shut it again as she looked uneasily towards the sky. It sounded as if a great, rushing wind was blowing through, yet the leaves and branches were still. That sound reminded her of something, too. Something unpleasant. There was no clear memory, just an impression of fear and unease.
'Yessss... You are wissse to be cautiousss...' The voice drew her attention back to the snake which had begun to sway a little side to side. Lady studied it warily. There was a menacing aura around it as well as a sense of great power.
“Wh-Who are you?” she asked as she slipped her right foot back.
'Ah... You forget?... I thought you had overcome that little problem...' the snake taunted as it continued to rock lazily.
The feeling of power and danger grew. Instinctively, Lady turned and began to run. She had not gone more than three steps, however, before she felt warm, slippery scales brush against the smooth skin of her legs. She cried out as the snake twined around her limbs and made her fall. It twisted and turned around her body, imprisoning her and squeezing tight.
Lady gasped desperately for air as she fought to free herself from its coils. “Let... me... go... Let... me... go!” she screamed breathlessly as her fingers clawed at the slick scales.
'Never...'
The snake raised its large head and caught her gaze once more. Tears leaked from Lady's frightened eyes as she stared at it, still struggling weakly. Slowly, the reptile opened its mouth, revealing its long, sharp teeth.
Faint with lack of air, Lady stared at the terrifying sight. The world around her faded to black until all she could see was the snake's head with its glowing eyes and shining teeth. And then, suddenly, she realized that there was no sense of evil around the creature. It was menacing, powerful, and dangerous, but it was not malevolent, no more than a thunderstorm or an earthquake.
Oddly, the realization banished the majority of her fear. Somehow, she knew that it was just playing with her. Testing her. It had no intention of really harming her, though it easily could.
Her fingers began to stroke the scales gently as she stared calmly yet warily into the snake's eyes. And under those soothing fingers, she felt the scales soften and melt back into soft feathers.
'Yesssss... Awake....' As the snake's voice faded, so did its body. The feathers under her fingers lingered a few seconds longer, and then became small balls of colored light that faded away. Lady lay on the forest floor, breathing calmly and staring blindly up at the canopy as she tried to make sense of what had just happened.
*rrrrrruuuuummmmmbllllllle*
The sound made brought her attention back to her surroundings abruptly as she sat up and looked around uneasily.
End Part I. Tlalli Iyollo = Heart of Earth
And now, I really must go pack. *wince* It's past bed time... At least, if I'm going to get up and go in early tomorrow the way I had planned...
