Doppelganger
To truly understand this storyline, you should start at the beginning
Dream Castle and read it in order.
Perfection is required AN: A doppelganger and a fetch are basically the same thing. Think of it as the creature came to fetch you for your afterlife.
Darien first spotted her in a store near his part time job. He almost called out to her, she looked so much like Serena. But as he came closer, he noticed that she wasn't. Her hair was too light and her eyes were gray. He turned away, his greeting caught in his throat.
Later that evening, while he had dinner over at his parents house, he brought her up. "Mom, do you believe in doppelgangers?" He savored the delicious smell rising from the table while he waited on her answer.
Joan Shields wondered where this question came from. "Doppelgangers? A person's double walking about... sometimes believed to herald the original's death if they should ever meet." Shaking her head, she looked askance at him. "No, I don't. There are people in the world that are more closely related than they know, or they pulled the same combination of genes out of the gene pool."
Darien raised an eyebrow at that last possibility. "The likelihood of that happening is astronomical."
"But still possible." Joan slid a piece of pot roast onto her plate beside the heaps of potatoes and carrots.
As Steven served himself, he looked at his son's expression of disbelief. "So, why this sudden interest in German ill omens?"
Darien twisted his fork about for a moment. "I thought I saw Serena today, but when I got closer, I could tell it wasn't her. The woman looked like a washed out version of her. Paler eyes and hair."
"You don't have to worry then. If it wasn't exact then it wasn't her fetch." Joan hoped her words would soothe the uncertainty on her son's face.
Later that evening, as he attempted to sleep he finally placed who the woman looked exactly like. It was the woman in his dream. The one that had told him to search for the silver crystal. Sure, her hair was slightly different, but that was it. The unknown woman looked more like his dream princess than Serena did. He finally drifted off to sleep, but instead of a respite, it brought dreams, wonderful dreams of being in that woman's arms.
Ever since that day, he saw her around town. He once tried to approach her, but she turned away, drifting into the crowds. 'Who is she? Why is she invading my thoughts?' He watched as she faded out of sight. 'Why is she in my dreams more than Serena? How can I dream of kissing her, of touching her, of loving her until we are both exhausted, but I can't for Serena?' Standing there, staring into the moving crowd, he made a vow to himself. He would meet her. He would learn why.
