Nightmares are stories of truth

To truly understand this storyline, you should start at the beginning Dream Castle and read it in order.

In a day's work

Pluto watched as Martiza sank into a deep sleep. For the past week Pluto had watched her avoiding Darien and she was sure she knew why. 'She needs to see the truth of what happened in that room. She needs to understand that Usagi was not in love with Endymion. If she doesn't, she'll never find happiness.' Pulling her staff through the time stream, she caught a part of the past that Queen Serenity would have never seen. Tugging at Maritza's soul, she sent her into the other time. Leaving her queen to her nightmare, she drifted into the darkness to wait. She would return her before the final end.

Maritza floated behind a red haired man. She had seen him in past dreams playing with Usagi and her friends. But this was unlike any dream she had ever had. It felt more real, the sounds were sharper, the colors were clearer, and the emotions were stronger. And somehow, she knew what he was thinking.

Aiden ran through the fray searching for one girl with blonde hair. He needed to find her, to protect her from the evil that had come to the Moon. A sword flashed near him. With skill born from practicing with the senshi when ever he could, he deflected the blade back at the owner, and then followed through with his blow, leaving his attacker on the ground behind him as he continued his search. He finally spotted one of the senshi near the palace gates with a contingent of guards at her back. "Jupiter!"

Lightening crashed into the enemy before the brown haired warrior. Aiden ignored the smell of burned flesh and ozone. "Jupiter! Where is she?"

Jupiter studied the near frantic look on the red-head's face. "In the palace. She is protected. No one is going to let her get hurt."

"Everybody will protect Venus... I mean Princess Serenity. I need to find Princess Usagi." Aiden could picture her lying in a pool of blood, her body sliced through while she tried to protect Serenity.

Maritza flinched at his mental image. 'He is right, they will be protecting Princess Serenity, not Usagi. I set her up for this. I... I killed her. I killed her by demoting her.' She watched to see what Jupiter would do.

'He is right. No one will think to defend her since she her demotion. She is Sailor Earth, but she has no training.' Jupiter glanced about the relatively calm area around the gates. Her mission was to guard the gates, to protect the castle and Princess Serenity, but Usagi was in there somewhere defenseless. She made eye contact with the captain of the guards, signaling for him to take command. "Come on, we'll find her." Turning, she left her post and ran through the gates with Aiden on her heels.

Kunzite noticed the moment she left. Signaling his men, he sent them forward crashing through the gate. Beryl followed him walking over the debris. Her victory was near.

Maritza watched the gates recede behind her as she was pulled along with Aiden. Dread seeped in as she witnessed the gates fall to the enemy.

Running through the garden into the main castle, Aiden and Jupiter searched. Jupiter glanced out a window and saw the enemy streaming in through her post. 'No! I... I let them in. I... I.' Spinning about, she headed for the nearest stairwell. "Keep looking, I have to get back to the fight."

Even as she followed him down the corridor, she wished she could follow Jupiter. 'It was my fault, not yours Jupiter. My decision led to this.'

Holding his sword in his hand, Aiden flew down the corridors to Usagi's favorite room. It was the one that over looked the massive fountain in the courtyard. He found her there with Prince Endymion dead at her feet. 'She hasn't transformed? I wonder why not.' Running forward, he placed himself between her and the woman that looked as if she was going insane.

Maritza froze. Nothing could make her enter the room any further. 'Endymion! She killed him. She killed Endymion!' Her eyes skated to Usagi, sure that she would see the same anguish that was in her heart reflected in her daughter's face. Its absence and the scene that unfolded before her surprised eyes shook her. 'Beryl is insane, she has to be. And Aiden is going to get himself killed.'

Beryl cackled madly at the man's bravado. "So, you wish to die as well? This little girl isn't worth that." She glanced over his head towards the princess. "Shall I kill him as well, Serenity? Or are you going to die in his place?"

Usagi stared at Aiden's shoulders. 'I can't let him die, too... Not him.' She tried to move in front of him. "No, don't kill him."

Aiden pushed her behind him. "You will not harm Usagi. Not as long as I live." Lunging forward, he slashed at the mad witch.

Beryl raised her hand and casually brushed his sword away. "You aren't worth much. So, die, if that is what you wish." Flicking her fingers towards him, she sent a spray of dark energy towards his face.

Jumping backwards, he knocked Usagi out of the way. The dark energy ate at him like acid. Screaming with pain and anger, he charged her again. This time he was enveloped into a globe of dark energy. His screams resounded through the room. As the ball disappeared, the sound of his sword hitting the ground cut through the eerie silence that had fallen.

Usagi stared at the sword, her heart shattering. 'No... not Aiden. She killed Aiden.' Her eyes, already swimming in tears, skittered over Endymion. 'Two men have died to protect me today. A good friend and...' She picked up Aiden's sword. 'And one that I cared for more that I should have. One that could never be mine.' Raising the sword, she faced Beryl.

"Do you think you can hurt me? You... the pampered princess of the Moon?" Beryl's red-eyes flickered over her dismissing the sword she held awkwardly.

"No. I know that I would be useless in attacking you, but..." She flipped the sword over, the point resting against her. "...I will deny you the pleasure of removing me from this world." She shoved the sword through her body, the screaming pain echoing the pain in her heart.

Maritza screamed. She was sure that the others in the room could hear her, but she didn't care. This witch was attacking Usagi because she thought she was Princess Serenity. And Usagi wasn't being protected because she wasn't Princess Serenity. Curling up into a floating ball, she cried for the daughter she had only had in her dreams. She cried for the senseless loss all because of her decision, her choices.

Pluto gently pulled Maritza's soul from the past and let it rest, floating in the time stream. She hadn't realized just how much that would hurt her queen, or how much she would blame herself. 'Her heart is strong, it will find the answers to her questions. It will find a way to make her understand and accept.'

Maritza felt as if she was floating on a sea of thoughts and dreams. She let the sea soothe her, and her common sense tried to resurrect itself. 'It is in the past. It is over. And there is nothing I could have done differently. The Earth forces would have attacked any way, and they would have succeeded even if Jupiter had stayed at her gate. Usagi, Aiden and Endymion would have died even if she had been Serenity. All this dream does is show that Aiden was there. I knew already knew the basics of what happened.'

She drifted with the currents under her, her thoughts unconsciously pulling other memories, other thoughts and dreams out of the time stream. Aiden and Usagi ran through the Castle garden, their love shining on their faces. Their unhappiness that nothing would come from it when she was named Princess Serenity. Their secret happiness when she was demoted.

'That is where she ran off to that day after I told her. No wonder she recovered quickly. But didn't she care for Endymion?' Images of Endymion and Usagi together appeared. All she could see was a friendship. None of the love she had seen in Endymion's eyes was there when he looked at Usagi. And none of the love she had just now seen on Usagi's face showed when she looked at Endymion.

Pluto gently pushed her back to her body, hoping that her Queen was comforted enough.

The images floated through Maritza's tired mind as she drifted back down to her bed. So many of the things she thought true were shown as false. It wasn't Endymion that Usagi loved.
