Manifest Fear
Huua... Huua... Huua...
Motoki peered fearfully through the murky twilight that filled their hiding spot under the thick, heavy branches, trying to spot Reika's pale form. She was right next to him, he knew, but he could not see her at all. He reached out his right arm, scrambling for her face, trying desperately to silence her panting breaths.
'It'll hear her! Hush! Reika, hush!' he thought frantically as his fumbling fingers finally located one of her high cheekbones. Quickly, he skimmed his hand across her clammy face, down her pert nose, and finally to her thin, glossy lips. He flattened his palm against them, trying to muffle the loud, rasping sound.
She struggled against him for a moment, then stilled abruptly. Seconds later, he heard it, too: a high, buzzing sound that pierced the darkness. He froze, terrified, as the noise grew louder and louder. It seemed to be coming towards them quickly from behind Reika. He had just decided to grab her hand, break cover, and make a run for it when his girlfriend jerked back away from him.
Motoki scrambled desperately after her as a sudden wind stirred the evergreen branches around them. She wasn't panting now, at least not that he could hear. His mouth opened and closed as he struggled to cry out her name around the knot in his throat. The monster could not have gotten her. It couldn't have! He stumbled towards her, breaking free of the branches.
The sight that met his gaze made him recoil in horror. Reika stood spotlighted in the dimness, arms outstretched to her sides, head thrown back as her body strained silently to release an agonized scream. Motoki fell backwards onto his rear, trembling with fear and disbelief. He did not see the invisible, winged monster that had been chasing them or the horrible, twisted version of Mamoru who had set it after them, just Reika.
Gradually, her body relaxed. Her arms came down to her sides, and then reached up to cross themselves over her chest, hand to shoulder. A strangled whimper escaped Motoki as he saw the red and green spots that were growing on her milky white skin. When the spots covered her hand, they took on a different appearance, becoming hard like a shell. Slowly, she raised her head back to its normal position, and he felt all of the air leave his lungs. It was not Reika's beautiful face. It was a beetle's head.
The creature ruffled the wings that had appeared on its back, creating a sound eerily similar to that of the monster that had chased them for so long. Motoki shook his head from side to side, desperately trying to deny what his eyes had seen. "Reika... No... Reika..." The creature leaned toward him, reaching out an impossibly long, sharp claw. "Reika... No!" He shrank back, unable to rise as the claw swept towards him. "Reika! REIKA!"
With a strangled yell and a desperate contortion, Motoki jerked awake and sat bolt upright in the hotel bed. He shivered as he looked frantically around the room trying to spot the monster from his nightmare. Slowly, the quiet hum of the ceiling fan and the quiet chirping of the tree frogs overcame the sound of his heart pounding in his ears, calming him as he finally woke enough to remember where he was. Still shaking, he raised a hand to his face to wipe the sweat out of his eyes.
