Title
A/N: Psydah = Neptune, Aphrodite = Venus
Psydah closed her eyes and tried to coax the melody she heard in her head out of her mermaid shaped violin. The sweet, haunting notes echoed through the small hall, clashing and cascading over themselves like Earth's oceans' waves in a storm. She frowned at the result, and tried to play faster. All those jarring crashes and conflicting echos should not be there. In her mind, there was only harmony and smoothness in the melody that danced like light on water.
The faster she played, the worse the chaos became. Finally, she had to stop, unable to bear the noise that no longer resembled a song. She lowered her violin, and glared reproachfully at her hands as the sound slowly faded away. It sounded so simple. Why couldn't she play it?
Finally, she breathed out a sigh and forced her impatience away. It would come. If she had to try to her dying day, she would get that beautiful melody to come out.
She suddenly realized that she could still hear a part of the melody. It stumbled around the hall, tentative and uncertain. Her eyes widened in surprise as she raised her dark head and looked around. It took her several long moments to find the source of the sound: a young, dark haired girl standing in a shadowy corner and playing a small lyre.
Psydah listened for a few more moments, and then lifted her violin back into place under her chin. Just as the harpsong began to fade away, she started to play the missing notes. The harpist hesistated, and then resumed.
Psydah felt her spirit soar as the melody finally fell into place. This was it! It was finally audible to everyone! The harpist stumbled a few times, still searching for the notes, but the basic melody was there and sound. As she brought the song to an end, Psydah felt a triumphant grin split her face.
She lowered the violin, and looked eagerly towards the harpist. The younger girl smiled back tentatively, and nodded. Still grinning, Psydah hurried across the hall. "Thank you!" she called. "I've been trying to play that for months!"
"You're... You're welcome," the girl replied shyly. "It just sort of came to me. That's a pretty instrument..." She eyed the strangely shaped violin curiously.
Psydah held it out so that she could look at it more closely. "I call her Don," she said proudly.
"Don?" the girl asked as she looked back up into the older girl's face. "She has a name?"
"Of course!" Psydah exclaimed. "Doesn't yours?" She tsked as the girl shook her head. "Well, maybe she just hasn't told you what it is yet. What about you? Do you have a name?"
The girl laughed suddenly. "'Nity. My name is 'Nity. What's yours?"
"I'm Psydah. It's nice to meet you, 'Nity. You play pretty well. How long have you been going to school here?"
"About six months," Serenity admitted. She blushed a little and looked down when Psydah stared at her in surprise.
"Um, do you want to try the song again?" Psydah asked, changing the subject back to one 'Nity would be more comfortable with. Eagerly, the younger girl lifted her head and nodded.
A little more than an hour later, they said goodbye and left the hall to go their separate ways. Psydah was still smiling happily. Not only did she finally get someone else to her her song, she had made a new friend. Although 'Nity was three years younger than her, they seemed to have a lot in common.
Psydah stopped suddenly in surprise as another girl stepped out of the shadows in front of her. She had long blonde hair, and wore a strange outfit that somehow looked familiar. "Leave her alone," the stranger said abruptly.
Psydah blinked, and tilted her head at the rude statement. "Who?"
"'Nity. Leave her alone," the girl replied.
"Why?"
Okay, this one is fighting me hard. Maybe it's just that I'm tired. Maybe I need to come up with a different idea for this theme. Any suggestions? Non-PGSM okay... ^-^
