She doesn't have time so I guess I'll just have to do it.
Back in the day.. 1997 to be exact. I was working at a volunteer haunted house in Charlestown. I had been doing this for about 5 years, but that year (the last one in fact) was special. Many stories start with "I saw her from across the room and time seemed to blah..blah..blah" you get the point. When I first saw
iolanthe I was at the top of a ladder covered in dust, my friend Tex was pointing out the other workers to her and I remember saying Hi, before I yelled to Brian to pass me more cable. Romantic huh?
That was Monday night. I don't remember much more of the next few days, there was alot of work getting things setup for the weekend. I remember she kept getting rides home from her dad, but that was it. She was just another one of the volunteers. Then came Thursday night. My job was simple just sit in the lobby and meet the new volunteers. I sat, said hello and directed them inside.
iolanthe came in an sat with me for a bit. We started talking, mostly about books that we had read, fantasy writers. It was interesting that we had read the same types of books, but never the same ones. I'm sure we talked about other things, but I couldn't say what. Looking back it feels as if we talked for a long time, but it must have been only an hour.
I remember that I couldn't stop thinking about her all weekend after that. At the time I had been single for 3 years and I couldn't get her out of my head. She was 16 and I was 21, I liked her, but I wasn't sure if that was a good thing. Anyway, I remember asking my friend Brian whether or not I should ask her out, and he said that he had just told another kid to ask
iolanthe out. I forget his name, maybe
iolantheknows...
to be continued...
