If you don't care about Readercon, you can safely ignore this post. If you're not sure if you care, Readercon is a small books-focused convention held in the Boston area that I used to attend and spent a year on the committee for. They are currently getting a lot of negative publicity because of a sexual harassment case that they chose to violate ( Read more... )

*support* I hope this ends up productive also. I'm also really sorry both that you dealt with that hostile environment in the first place and that recent events have prompted you to put this out there.

Thanks for posting this; I had indeed been wondering, though what with all else that changed with the 2010 convention and events leading up to it I'd never gotten around to asking.

My wife once arranged for her synagogue to get a grant to have someone come out and give a seminar on how to do a better job attracting and engaging volunteers. At one of the sessions, a certain Very Influential Person in the synagogue asked what could be done about people who come in, and volunteer, and then pester the synagogue officers with all sorts of ideas for radical changes in the way things have are done.

(N.B.: in this context, “radical changes” are not along the lines of “change the synagogue from Orthodox to Reform Judaism”, but more like “require department heads to submit budgets”.)

Well, the volunteer-attraction trainer person said, perhaps you should consider whether or not their ideas have merit.

Whoosh!

Thank you. This makes a lot of things clearer to me. FWIW, I would have loved a shuttle from South Station! I stopped coming to Readercon because of transportation difficulties. Heck, I love the other ideas too, especially engaging the next generation!
