on coal and mountains

In contact improv on Tuesday, Alex had us build our bodies in to mountains. I felt the earth rising (one converging plate subducts under the other and the Earth pushes up), the tenuous roots of trees, the crisp high altitude air. Maybe it's because of the majesty we attribute towards mountains that we want to save them. I remember always loving that line of America the Beautiful the best, hiking every weekend and calling myself a "mountain not beach" person to my Jersey shore bound friends.

It's interesting to consider the Appalachians and the Redwoods, the emotive response they cause in us because of their beauty. Not that they don't need fighting for (peoples livelihoods depend on the mountainsides, and we need to stand in solidarity with them).

Kyla posted a great entry on Monday's action outside of the Capitol Coal Plant, with photos and news article links: incendiaryfs.livejournal.com/437922.html

Here's the Meigs CAN website. Meigs CAN is an organization in Appalachian Ohio fighting the proliferation of coal power plants in the area- which are polluting the land and claiming human lives. www.meigscan.org/

Mountain Justice is a great organization that fights mountain top removal. They're hosting a MJ Summer Training Camp from May 17-23 in Pipestem, WV. Who's coming with me? www.mountainjusticesummer.org/

Rising Tide was totally bad ass with regards to the Capitol Climate Action because they spoke out against natural gas, as well as coal. Check out their North American site: www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/what-is-rising-tide/
The Boston and Baltimore chapters are particularly awesome.
