so this was the weekend of my symphony. it was awesome. the week before was a bit stressful, as i didn't meet my deadlines. however, it all got done and performed. saturday night at the arboretum was good. there were a few bits in the first movement that didn't really come off, but the second movement was a smash hit and the third movement--with its fanfares and cymbal crashes--got the crowds up and cheering at the end. that was good. sunday afternoon at walt disney concert hall was a major success. the piece sounded wonderful and i got applause after each movement. it was cool.
the best thing about getting your piece played is having the chance to talk to people about it afterwards. it's so cool to see how your work touches other folks. i met lots of very nice people, including an orchestra conductor from my home town who will probably be programming either my symphony or a new piece with his orchestra in tulsa sometime in the near future. i also met a really nice italian film maker, who did a documentary on terry riley, and who is a possibility for collaboration. we shall see. on top of that, i now have a performance opportunity in vancouver bc with a chamber orchestra there that's conducted by our "assistant conductor type person" at cal phil.
so that's the short version. suffice it to say, it was mostly all cake. really good cake. incredibly excellent cake, even.
