The breathing behind her slowed, then regulated. There was shuffling. A brief hiss of pain. The stretching of stiff muscles. Then silence.
The Novice took a deep breath, when it seemed that whatever was behind her was content to stay there. She lifted her face, fur stained with tears, away from her apron. Another deep breath, and she turned.
Hame gasped and averted her eyes, as any decent cat should.
Where her beloved Face had been moments before, a young and rather naked human male now stood. He appeared to be inspecting himself, running his hands over a toned chest and handsome features. He glaced up and met curious almond shaped eyes.
"Novice Hame," He smiled, nervously, she noticed. Although he didn't seem to be too bothered with exposure, as he made no move to cover himself.
She swallowed, scanning the room for any sign of her lost friend, "W-who might you be?"
The man smiled more openly now, "I have many names," He answered, making the cat frown, "But my most recent may give you quite a shock."
"Who are you?" She repeated, dragging herself to her feet and raising her voice, "And what have you done with my deceased master?"
"He's not dead."
Novice Hame faltered, "Yes, h-"
"The Face of Boe is immortal. A fixed point in time and space. He cannot die," The man watched her pause, considering him. He looked and sounded honest, and all people knew of the incredible age of the Face. Perhaps he was immortal, "As for what I have done with him, I have done nothing."
Hame opened her mouth again, but the man silenced her with a lift of his hand.
"Do you remember, many months ago, when your Master asked you to put something aside for him? A 'Case of Memories', i believe he called it," The cat nodded, "Will you fetch it, please?"
Again, she nodded, scampering off through the Citadel.
The man sighed, picking his way through the shards of glass, to a reflective panel in the monitor. He inspected his face and hair.
No more grays, he observed, Well, i suppose that's one thing to be thankful for.
