Slumped over the bar, he tried to forget himself. He downed a shot. And another. And another.

The club was closed. He had broken in. His eyes hurt, his back ached. He didn't care.

Another shot. And another.

"Jack," The voice was sad and soft. Jack didn't look up.

"Jack," Sterner this time. Jack sighed and pushed himself away from the bar slightly. A man stood in the middle of the room, a small smile on his face. Jack didn't smile. He had no reason to.

"Doctor," He pored some more shots, pushing one of them across the bar, in front of the stool beside him. The Doctor sat down.

Neither man said anything. Jack continued to drink. The Doctor watched him. He took in the red rimmed eyes, grey skin and battered clothes.

"You okay, Jack?"

Jack locked eyes with his old friend, "No," he swallowed another shot. His eyes glazed over, "They all die. All of them. In the end." He furiously wiped the tears from his eyes, "Always the ones you love."

"I've lost people to, Jack. More than you."

"I've lost so many people, but it's never felt like this." He turned to the Doctor, and watched the other man flinch at the pain in his eyes. "He was different. I've never wanted to die so badly in my whole life. Never."

"You really want that? You really want to end your life?"

"More than anything in the world."

The Doctor sighed, getting up from the bar. He stood beside his fallen comrade, hand outstretched, "Come with me."

Jack's eyes flitted from the other mans face, to his hand. He took it, and let the Doctor lead him away.

Jack had missed the TARDIS. He stroked the controls, listening to her hum. His lips twitched into all that was left of his smile. He thought about asking the Doctor where he was taking him, but he found he didn't care. He didn't care about anything or anyone anymore. Jack leaned against the center console, watching his friend pushing buttons and flicking switches. He wondered if the Doctor would lecture him, tell him how important it was to keep going. He looked up.

"Stand facing that, Jack," He said, pointing to a grey panel on the console. Jack did as he was told. His old self might have wondered what the Doctor was doing, but that Jack Harkness died a decade ago in a room with a glass tank, in the heart of London.

The Doctor watched him, welling up at the sight of a broken man, once so full of life, "Is there nothing for you to live for, Jack?"

"No, nothing," Jack replied, his voice deadpan. Tears spilled down the Doctor's cheeks. He pressed a button, and the panel opened.

Light seeped out, reaching towards Jack, drawing him in. He finally realized what the Doctor had done. He was giving him what he wanted. Although transfixed by the heart of the TARDIS, Jack could just see his old friend in the corner of his eye. The Doctor had pressed a hand to his mouth, tears pouring from his eyes, trying to stifle his sobs.

"Good bye Jack," He choked out.

The TARDIS reached inside him, finding the piece of it's self trapped inside Jack. Every death he had even been through flashed through Jack's head, hazy and contorted now. The life was being sucked out of him, and Jack was the happiest he'd been in a long time. He saw in his mind's eye all the lovers and wives and husbands and friends he had lost. All those amazing people. And he saw him. The only one that he really truly loved. Ianto.

He couldn't see, he couldn't hear. He was dieing. Properly this time. Ianto stretched out his arms and Jack ran to him.

With his last breath, he called out to his savior, "Thank you, Doctor."

The world went black, but Jack was safe in Ianto's arms. Where he always should have been.
