Two identical pairs of piercing blue eyes bore into each other across the table. The Captain and the child, locked in an almost showdown. Becca spoke first
“Where am I?” she asked, eyes flickering around the almost empty room, “What is this place?”
“21st century Earth, located in Sector 8023 of the Third Quadrant.” Jack said,
almost on autopilot after so many encounters with very lost aliens. But this was rather different, “But you already know that, right?” Becca nodded, watching his face carefully.
“You are currently in Cardiff, capital city of Wales in the United Kingdom. This,” Jack waved an arm in the direction of the main Hub, “Is an organization founded 100 years ago to defend planet Earth from Alien threat,” He smiled, “Welcome, Becca, to Torchwood.”
Becca’s eyes went wide, her mouth popping open in surprise, “So… that would make you Captain Jack Harkness?” It was Jack’s turn to be surprised. He opened his mouth, but stopped when Becca started rummaging around in the flight suit she wore, opening pockets and patting herself down, “I knew I recognized you from somewhere. How I could have not known straight away is… Ah!” She pulled a crumpled envelope from a pocket on her thigh and smoothed it out on the table. She then opened yet another pocket and pulled out a small bundle held together with an elastic band. They were photographs. Becca pulled the first one out of the bundle and put it down on the table, sliding it towards Jack.
“That’s you, isn’t it?”
The photo had been taken in a hospital room. It showed a woman in a bed holding a baby, smiling up at a man stood next to her.
It was taken August 5th, 1975. The day Lucia gave birth.
Jack stared at it for a long while, reliving that day. He smiled fondly as he remembered the way she screeched at him, crushing his hand in hers as she pushed, calling him names and screaming obscenities at him. He had just laughed, smoothing her hair back from her face and whispering encouragement into her ear.
Jack took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He met Becca’s curios gaze,
“Where did you get this?”
“My mother gave it to me… It was the only picture she had of-”
“What was your mother’s name?”
Becca blinked, “She gave herself a new name when she came to Draxon, it was her real name, she said. And then she took my father’s-”
“What,” Jack repeated, clenching his teeth, “was her name?”
The sound of footsteps carried towards them; hurried heeled footsteps. And then Gwen appeared in the doorway.
“Oh,” she stopped “Er- Jack, we’ve got the results for you to look over…”
He put up a hand to stop her, before returning his gaze to Becca.
“The name my mother gave us was Mellissa Harkness,” She said quietly, looking down at the table in front of her.
Jack put his head in his hands, drawing in a deep breath and letting it slowly back out. Gwen frowned.
“Who?”
Jack looked up at her, “Mellissa was Alice’s original name, from before she went into deep cover.”
“Oh... what about the ‘Harkness’ bit? I thought... well...” Gwen trailed off, shifting from one foot to the other.
“That she hated me?” Jack asked plainly, “So did I...”
“Well, she did come to see you...”
“She did?” Jack asked in disbelief. Gwen nodded.
“Last Monday. We found her on the CCTV around lunchtime. Right before we had a bit of trouble with a species that used an electrical disturbance to cripple us, and most of the city. Huge power cut basically...”
“So you weren’t monitoring the rift?” Jack stood up, leaning on the table and staring right into Gwen’s eyes.
“Um, no. Only for an hour... but before she was there, and after there’s no sign of her. She might have just wandered off-”
“Or you’ve let my daughter fall through the Rift!” Gwen opened her mouth but thought better of it, looking suitably ashamed.
“I’m sorry Jack, we’re still working on finding her. We will find her.”
