Q5. Why Did Hans Try to Kill Elsa?

My daughter, just like every other little girls out there, loves Frozen. It used to be on repeat everyday at home until I finally managed to put a stop to it, so of course she's been having lots of questions about some scenes from the movie. The most often one that she asks is 'Why Hans Tried to Kill Elsa?'.

D: Mama, why Hans tried to kill Elsa?
M: Because he wants to be the King of Arandelle. If there are no Elsa and Anna, he can be the king.
D: But killing is not nice. Why did he kill her?
M: Well, Hans is not a nice person.
D: But at first he was nice to Anna.
M: He was just pretending to be nice to Anna.
D: Why is he pretending to be nice?
M: Because he wanted something from Anna. He wanted to be King. If he marries Anna and Elsa dies, Anna will be Queen and Hans will be King.
D: So that's ok, right?
M: No, it's not. You can't take something that belongs to other people without asking nicely. If he wanted to be king, he should have asked Elsa nicely 'Elsa, can I be King of Arandelle?'. If Elsa says 'no', then he shouldn't force her.
D: So he pretended to be nice?
M: Yes.
D: But Hans looks nice. How can he be bad?
M: You can't judge people from how they look. People who look nice might not always be nice. Just like people who don't look nice might actually be nice.
D: What?
M: Like the Beast, he looks really scary right? But once Belle got to know him, she found out that he is actually nice. And in this case, Hans looks like a really nice person right, but once we got to know him we found out that he is actually very cunning.
D: What is cunning?
M: Errr.... oh look, Papa is home! *runs to greet Papa*
