I finally found one

Haven't posted for a while, lots going on, just not ready to put it in my journal yet. Let's just say it involves a big career change.

I was clearing out some tree-fall near the elementary school for firewood, and I came upon what looked like a "Chicken Mushroom, a prized poly-pore mushroom, growing out of a log. The nickname comes from the alleged fact that it tastes like chicken. Well I've had lots of oyster mushrooms, but they never tasted like oysters really even though that's how they were given the name, same with salsify also known as oyster weed. But the Chicken most definitely tastes like chicken breast, even having the same texture! I placed it over sauted onions, very nice taste but the mature specimen I had was a little dry, recommendations are for soups and stews, while younger specimens are very moist and can be sauteed. I read one source that claims all poly-pores are ediblee, but turns out the Chicken should be avoided if it is growing on any sort of conifer or locust, can cause belly-aches.

Amongst the tree-fall I removed there where many small cedars. These trees have been dead for many, many years, but they do not rot. They also don't absorb moisture like most other dead-wood. This species has a beautiful deep purple core, and of course my woodpile now has a wonderful cedar smell.
