“Where did our summer go?” Kylan whined as he slumped against the chair. “Why does time have to be so slow during school? Why is it always faster when we’re free from its evil clutches? And why does that professor have to teach ALL the mandatory courses?!”

Devon barely glanced at Kylan who sighed. Devon wiped his paintbrush as he sat before the canvas. “Those are rhetorical questions right?”

“I was more hoping you had all the answers.”

“I may be good, but I’m not that good.” Devon commented casually as he dabbed his paintbrush into the paint.

“I beg to differ.” Kylan positioned the chairs so that he was able to lay comfortably on them. “Don’t tell me my personal psychologist is unable to help me out anymore?”

“I am here to listen, and as I’ve said before, I suck at advice.” He flipped his hair from his eyes. “Deal with it.”

Kylan chuckled. He watched as Devon left red strokes across the top of the painting, cautiously yet skillfully applied. “Though you’ve been complaining a lot about painting, you’re pretty good at it.”

Devon scoffed. “I’m absolutely horrible at this.” He leaned back to take a look at his work. “…I should set this on fire.”

Kylan rose up from his seat and walked behind Devon. He pursed his lips and then lightly smacked Devon’s head who cried out in pain. “You’re such a weakling… And its fine, whatever it is you’re painting.” Kylan tilted his head. “What exactly are you painting?”

Devon sighed. “I don’t even know.” He rubbed his eyes dejectedly. Kylan patted his back.

“You’ll be fine.” Kylan reassured, Devon sighed again before resuming his work. Kylan stayed quiet when he started to ask. “Do you think...”

“Hmm?” Devon waited for him to continue but there was no reply.

Kylan shook his head as he reached for his backpack. “Nevermind.”

“Leaving so soon?” Devon said without looking away.

“Blame my professor… I swear she’ll be the end of me one day.” Kylan opened the door but paused to look behind him. “Promise not to burn it, and if you don’t want it, just give it to me.” Kylan smiled as he left the room and closed the door behind him. Devon stared at the door a bit before his eyes returned to the canvas.

“I’d still rather burn it.” Devon looked away in disgust and started to clean up. As he packed the paintings he glanced at the door once more. “You don’t need all the answers.” Devon murmured. “You need a solution.”

Devon crossed his arms as he stood before his canvas, analyzing it. He was glad that he finally finished but was still unsatisfied with his work.

“Devon!” Devon cringed as he recognized her voice. Devi waltzed into his room and stood beside him.

“If it’s another party, count me out.”

“It’s not a party, per say.” Devon looked at her from the corner of his eye. “It’s a club-”

“No.” Devi stomped on the floor. “I find it ridiculous that you still need my supervision.” He continued.

Devi huffed. “Unfortunately, blame our parents. Though I have no idea how they think you can actually save me if something were to happen.” She slapped Devon’s shoulder.

“Ow.” Devon rubbed his shoulder. “Abuse not needed.” Devi scowled but then noticed the painting.

“…That’s what you’ve been doing this whole time? Why couldn’t you do it at school?”

“I was thinking I’d have more peace here than at the art room… No idea how I came to that conclusion.” He muttered the last part.

Devi examined it. “It’s so plain. Maybe you should stick to drawing.”

Devon glowered at her. “I see you’re not trying to kiss up to me. And if that was, you fail at it.” Devon frowned. “You’re not nice at all.”

Devi scoffed. “No one is nicer than I am. There was one, but I took care of that.” Devon ignored her as he wrapped the painting in the cloth. “Are you really not going to take me?”

“Do you expect me to change my mind?” Devi puffed her cheeks. “That’s not even cute.” She slapped his shoulder before charging out of the room. “….Ow.”

He plopped down on the bed, he reminded himself to change for tonight when his phone rang. He furrowed his eyebrows when he recognized the ring tone, he answered. “Kylan?”

“Hey.” Devon waited for him to continue.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, just wanted to talk.” Kylan laughed slightly. “Want to hang out?”

“Can’t, going on a date with Lyn.” Devon said quietly. “Where are you?”

“At the park, it’s peaceful over here.” A short silence ensued before Kylan finished. “Have fun on your date.” Before Devon could get a word in he hung up.

Devon felt the guilt immediately crept in, but it had to be done. He quickly dialed the number, once it connected he stated. “I’m sorry Lyn, think we’re going to have to reschedule tonight’s date.” He said rather quickly, a difference as he usually was shy and composed when he called Lyn. Lyn reassured him that it was fine, even after a few more apologies.

He put on his jacket and was about to step out when he looked behind him. He nodded to himself and decided it was appropriate.

Kylan swung lazily on the swing, the night was peaceful but the dry heat still hovered. He couldn’t care less however, and stared at the ground before him. He then heard footsteps; he thought nothing of it even as they were closer to him. He remained in his trance until a pain erupted from his head.

“OW! What was that for-Devon?!” Kylan looked up at a panting Devon, who held a large object in his hands. “Why did you- Ow-ow-ow stop it!” Devon kept smacking him with the object that Kylan ran from the swing. “Enough! What’s wrong?”

“You idiot!” Kylan was taken aback by his tone, but ran as Devon chased him with the object in tow.

“How am I an idiot?” Kylan asked back, he then tripped and landed abruptly on the floor, where Devon proceeded to whack him with the object.

“Idiot. Idiot. IDIOT!” Devon repeated, Kylan then yanked the object of his hands and quickly backed away. Devon piercing stare sent shivers down Kylan’s side.

He held up his hand. “Would you calmly explain to me what happened?”

“You are an idiot.”

“I think we covered that.”

“You are an idiot.” Devon said, still out of breath. “You are not allowed to do that to me, ever!” He gestured.

“Mind telling me what I did? Especially now, so that I remind myself to never do it again.”

Devon narrowed his eyes at him. “Stop making me worry.” He turned around and kicked the ground fiercely.

Kylan blinked, utterly confused. “What?”

“You idiot, do you know how worried I was when you called me like that?”

“But I didn’t say anything to make you worry-“

“Exactly! You always talk about your problems, your issues, or just talk in general! But you just hung up without even saying a word! What is the matter with you?!”

Kylan gaped, seeing Devon snap like this was unusual. He mentally promised himself to make sure to never see that side of him again. And considering the bruises he knew he’d have, he swore on it. “Devon, breathe.”

Devon complied as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “I will never forgive you for this.” He declared.

“Why?” Kylan asked timidly.

“You made me run.” Kylan smiled as he watched Devon collapsed on the ground. “Now, you tell me what’s wrong.” He ordered. Kylan was hesitant but he decided it was better to obey than resist. He still kept the object beside him, but on the other side of him away from Devon.

“There’s not much to say.” Kylan started, Devon patted his chest to control his breathing but listened nonetheless. “I’m moving on… it just hurts more than I thought it would.”

“You were rejected?” Devon asked.

Kylan shook his head. “If I don’t confess, it can’t be considered a rejection.” Devon glanced at his expression. “Right?”

“I guess… We could look at it that way.” Devon said.

“I’ve already made the decision to move on; I can’t necessarily say forget because we’re all in the same college. She’s the best friend of your girlfriend too.”

“I’m sorry?” Kylan merely laughed.

“It’s fine.” Kylan then stretched his arms, he heard them crack. “You really hit like a girl.” Devon glared at him. “Well, a normal guy would’ve punched me. But you hit me with… what is this?”

“It’s for you.” Devon replied, Kylan tilted his head. He pointed at himself and Devon nodded, with that he proceeded to take off the cloth. “It’s horrible, and I still rather gauge my eyes out from it but-“

“Are you blind?” Kylan interrupted. “This is amazing!” The sun was rising from the sea, reflecting against the blue ocean before it. It was simple yet such a detailed and intricate design. “Got inspired by the beach?”

“… I’d rather not relive that weekend.”

“Why? It was fun.” Kylan snickered as Devon shot him a quick glare. “Just be glad we had that fire extinguisher.”

“That didn’t reassure the fire marshals.” Kylan cringed at the memory.

“Are you sure you want me to have this?” Kylan asked.

“You’re the one who said not to burn it, but if you don’t want it I’ll just-“

Kylan moved the painting away from Devon’s hands. “No way are you burning this. You’re really talented for this type of stuff.” He said proudly.

Devon looked away shyly, “Stop lying.” Kylan beamed.

“I’d never lie when it has to do with your work.” Devon blew the hair out of his eyes and watched as Kylan carefully wrapped the painting.

“I’m still mad at you.” Devon said suddenly.

“Why?”

“Because it’s hot, you’d think nights would be cooler.” Kylan watched as Devon gave a slight pout, Kylan barked a laugh. Devon gave him a dirty look. “Not funny.” He kicked his leg but Kylan wouldn’t stop laughing.

“You.” Kylan said in between breaths. “Make me smile. Ironic, isn’t it?”

“Very.” Devon studied Kylan as he tried to catch his breath. “As I said before, I won’t give advice, but I’ll listen.”

“I know.”

“I doubt it, just please remember that.” He pleaded. “It doesn’t matter the time or the date,” Kylan nodded. “But I beg you, please let the meetings be in a cold environment.”

Kylan nodded then furrowed his eyebrows. “Wait a minute, didn’t you have a date-”

“I think we should get going.” Devon sat as he abruptly got up. He started to walk away, Kylan grinned.

“You care about me! Admit it!” Kylan called out.

“I do not!” Kylan chuckled as he got up and followed him.

“You passed up a date with Lyn to meet with me, how sweet.” Kylan mocked in a high pitched voice, Devon turned around.

“I will grab that painting, knock you out and set you both on fire.”

“Your love is so passionate.” He dodged Devon’s hand. “I’m kidding!” He ruffled Devon’s hair. “But I think you still have time to call Lyn for that date.”

“It’s fine.” Devon said. “Lets go hang out somewhere, preferably with an A/C.”

“Aw, going to hang out with me instead of off with your girlfriend? You’re so loyal.” Before Devon could retort his phone rang. “Why is the theme song for Jaws playing?”

“Because that means Devi is calling. Hello?” He answered.

“HOW DARE YOU CANCEL ON LYN YOU SON OF A-” Devon muffled the phone.

“Devi’s wrath is quite scary.” Kylan commented, Devon narrowed his eyes.

“You think?” Devon moved his hand.

“YOU DON’T DESERVE HER YOU A-”

“Devi, language.” Riya’s voice was heard. Kylan immediately stiffed.

“Sorry.”

“Um...Devon? It’s fine.” Lyn’s voice chimed in.

“It is not fine! How dare he, ugh. Devon, I will curse you out later for this!” With that she hung up. They both stared at the phone.

“I’m staying over your place tonight.” Devon stated. Kylan nodded.

“What do you want to do?” Kylan asked.

Devon looked on at the street in front of them. “You talk and I listen, as we always do. Even if its not much, that’s all I can offer.” He nodded to himself before walking off; Kylan grinned as he caught up and patted Devon’s head.

“That’s fine… That’s all I need.”
