Devi twirled her hair around her finger as she giggled, emphasizing her relentless compliments by raising another octave.
The young man grinned as he ruffled his blonde hair. “Reminds me, I wanted to ask you.”
Devi widened her eyes just slightly and smiled. “Yes?”
“You see...” He trailed off as he looked behind her, Devi shifted her eyes side to side.
“Something wrong?”
“There’s this creepy guy staring at you.” Aaron said, Devi blinked and turned to see.
“Oh...” She turned back to look at him. “He’s just my cousin.”
“Your cousin looks angry.”
“He always looks angry, anyway! How about a movie this Friday?” She said as she clapped her hands together.
“Um...” Aaron trailed off, then he snapped his fingers. “You know, I have this project that’s due this Monday, just remembered.”
“Hah.” Devi’s smile faltered. “Oh really, just remembered?” A hint of sarcasm in her voice.
“Yeah, I should probably get going now. See you later!” Aaron hurried off leaving Devi there.
Her smiled dropped completely, “See you later? Doubt it.” She huffed as she turned on her heel and stomped towards Devon who sat on the stone wall as he listened to his music. He raised his eyebrows as he took off one headphone.
“Yes?”
“Was there a reason you were staring so intently at me?”
“...Was I? I blanked out.” Devon said, Devi sighed.
“You need to stop that creepy habit of yours. Have you seen yourself in a mirror lately? You look like some crazed psycho killer!”
“Kylan said something along those lines before.” Devon murmured as he looked off into the distance.
Devi placed her hands on her hips. “You completely interrupted my chance of going on a date this weekend!” She said angrily.
“I didn’t interrupt.” Devon said, Devi mentally slapped herself.
She sat down beside him and closed her eyes, “And so begins my life as a nun.”
“The convent actually wants someone pure and holy.” Devon reasoned, “And you’re neither.”
Devi opened her eyes and faced him, “You’re horrible. And besides, its your fault that Aaron isn’t going to talk to me now.”
Devon shook his head. “None of these guys seem to know I don’t care about who you date, do they?”
“Clueless.” Devon shrugged. “You’re not exactly a threat either.”
“I don’t get involved in your issues.”
Devi rubbed her temples. “This family is cursed in finding love.”
Devon raised an eyebrow, “If that were the case, we both wouldn’t be here right now.” He looked up. “Especially you.”
Devi glared at him. “I still wonder how you came to be.” She sighed, “I’m being honest, my romance track record hasn’t exactly been amazing.”
“Ever considered its your personality.” He looked up to see a dark aura emanating around her.
“Its not me, its them.” She said in a dark sweetly voice.
“Yeah... its definitely not you.” He said sarcastically. “Maybe stop trying to act cute?”
“Pft, I don’t act cute, I am cute.” She pouted, Devon shook his head.
“Being naturally cute and trying too hard to be cute are two different things.” He said, “Act like yourself and eventually some guy will fall for you. Not all guys like cute girls.”
“Oh really?” Devi crossed her arms. “Tell me, is the girl you like cute?”
Devon looked down. “I said not all.”
Devi scoffed. “You see! Even you like cute girls, if I don’t act like I am then there’s no chance at all for me to find a guy in this-AH!” Devon slightly jumped, banged her fists on her legs.
“You’re a masochist aren’t you.” Devon commented, Devi hit him in the arm. “Ow... sadist.”
“They’re all afraid of you, but you’re so weak.” Devi huffed, “Every time something goes wrong! Something has to go wrong. Of course it does, whats the point of getting cute guys if none of them want to actually date you.”
“...You realize you’re asking the wrong person right?”
Devi sighed. “Yes, this shows how desperate I am.”
Devon looked around, “I have to go.” He said as he watched her expression. “And... maybe ask your friends for advice instead of me.”
“Yeah...maybe.” Devi said as she swung her legs back and forth.
“Yeah...” He trailed off. “Good luck.”
Devi furrowed her eyebrows, completely surprised. “Oh, thanks.”
“Not to you.” Devon said as he walked away. “To the poor guy who falls for you.”
Devi gaped. “How are you and I related?!”
Devon looked back. “I wondered what I did to deserve this punishment.” He said as he walked off, Devi fumed.
---
Devon walked towards Kylan who sat on the bench, he looked up and breathed in. “Finally, was thinking you weren’t coming.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Devon asked, Kylan shook his head.
“You’re right...” He trailed off, a silence ensued. Devon looked and grabbed the sketchbook out of his bag and flipped it open. As he started to draw, Kylan placed his hands on his face. “I don’t know what to do!”
Devon didn’t look up, Kylan continued on. “I mean, I’m more used to girls being the ones who make the first move. I do some flirting here and there.” Devon raised his eyebrows. “But I never once actually asked a girl out! And here she is, the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen and she’s just... out of my reach.” He said dramatically. Devon kept on drawing, a moment passed before Kylan turned to look at him. “You’re listening?”
“I’m always listening.” Devon murmured, “Riya is really that beautiful?”
Kylan widened his eyes. “How do you know?”
Devon lowered his eyes at him. “You are an open book. If I couldn’t tell that much I’d be blind.”
Kylan bit his lower up. “Then the chances that she knows-”
“She definitely knows.” Jayin said from behind him, both Kylan and Devon jumped up from the bench and dropped their stuff on the ground
“How did you?” Kylan looked around, he then furrowed his eyebrows. “Wait, how do you know she knows?”
Jayin tilted his head. “Knows? Knows what? Who’s she? Who we’re talking about?”
Kylan and Devon lowered their eyes at him. Devon grabbed onto his own hair in frustration. “Why can’t you just die?”
“Definitely not.” He then looked at his watch. “Aw, can’t play with you guys anymore. Have to go!” He jumped over the bench and ran off.
Devon and Kylan both grabbed their stuff from the ground and sat on the bench. “That guy will be the end of me.” Devon murmured, Kylan chuckled. Devon had a confused look on his face as he dusted his sketchbook, “Why are you laughing?”
“Never had anyone caused you so much... frustration?”
Devon lowered his eyes, “Glad you’re enjoying yourself, really. At my expense.”
Kylan laughed and then looked up. “So she does know...”
Devon breathed in. “She’s a lot more observant than any of us, and you’re not exactly the toughest code to break.”
Kylan nodded. “Then... what do I do?”
Devon slowly turned to face him. “Excuse me?”
“What do I do?” Kylan said, his expression expectant.
Devon blinked, “...Is there something on my face?”
Kylan raised an eyebrow. “What? No.”
“Am I giving off a different aura?”
“No...”
“I’m still wearing black?”
“Yes?”
Devon looked off and blinked a few times. “Then why am I suddenly every one's love counselor.” Devon said under his breath.
Kylan tilted his head, he couldn’t hear him. “Are you all right?” He watched as Devon looked at the sky, he also looked around. “What are you looking for?”
“Flying pigs, apparently they’re in season.” Kylan lowered his eyes and hit him lightly on the shoulder. “Ow...”
“That didn’t even hurt.”
“Yes, yes it did.” Devon emphasized by rubbing his arm, Kylan rolled his eyes.
“You’re too sensitive, I don’t think Lyn likes guys who are like that.”
Devon froze, “Like I care.”
“But you do care.” Kylan replied, “Ever going to confess to her?”
Devon faced him. “Do you even know me?”
Kylan laughed. “Yes, and I know that probably means the chance of you two going out is close to zero.”
Devon drew on his sketchbook, Kylan looked on. “That doesn’t bother you?”
“No.” Devon answered, “I’m not the type to actually want to pursue the girl I like. I’m better off with watching from afar. Especially if she’s completely different than how I imagined, since having a crush tends to exaggerate things.”
“Implying something?”
“You understand then.” Kylan patted Devon on the back. “That hurts too.”
“You wimp.”
“Mm.” Devon gave a small hint of a pout. “Besides, having a girlfriend seems too expensive.”
“Love doesn’t cost anything, remember?”
Devon flipped his hair. “I doubt that statement completely. Girls say that but definitely don’t follow it. Look at Devi, not a gold digger but she isn’t going to go out with a guy who’s cheap.”
Kylan shrugged. “Maybe Lyn is different.”
“Maybe she isn’t.” Devon replied. “And Riya is definitely the expensive type.”
“How so?”
“You haven’t notice?” Devon lowered his eyes, “Look at her clothes, the way she talks and how she walks. She’s up there.”
“You’ve been looking at her?” Devon blinked.
“First off, she’s Devi’s best friend. Second, she’s not my type.” Devon stated, he flipped his hair. “Are you ready for a girl like her?”
Kylan thought if over. “I...”
“Mm?”
“I’m ready.” He grinned, “I’m absolutely ready.”
“Really?”
“No, but I felt confident for a minute there.” Kylan admitted, Devon laughed. “You say you don’t want to risk her being not what you pictured, even though she might be better than you thought.”
Devon resumed drawing, “No.”
Kylan tsked, “You could be missing out on something great.”
“Or avoiding something disastrous.”
“The chances of that are-”
“Extremely high.”
“Devon.” Kylan said seriously. “Just once do something unlike you.”
“I’m wearing white shoes, that should count.”
“No that doesn’t-wait, you’re wearing white shoes?” Kylan shook his head. “Never mind. Just do me a favor and take this chance.”
Devon kept on drawing, Kylan sighed. “I have to go to class, so I’ll talk to you later.” He lightly patted Devon on the back. “And heed my advice!”
“I’m heeding.” Devon murmured as Kylan walked off. He then paused. “How did that conversation end up about me?”
---
Devon closed his eyes, he had to turn away from his from his horrible attempt at a painting.
“I prefer drawing.” He muttered as he walked into the supply closet, he was the last student finishing up his project. He heard a sound of tools falling on the floor behind him.
“Kylan, that didn’t scare me before and it won’t scare me now.” Devon said, he put the stuff away. After hearing no retort he turned to see a startled Lyn. Devon swiftly faced the wall.
“Sorry.” Lyn said nervously, Devon gulped. “The professor had to leave and asked me to return some of the supplies.” Devon didn’t respond. Lyn breathed in and it took all the courage she had to take two steps toward him.
Three figures looked through the gap near the dark window. “C’mon-”
“Shush Jayin.”
“But Riya!”
“How did you even convince Lyn to deliver those supplies?” Kylan whispered.
“That’s not all I convinced her to do.”
Devon continued to organize the supplies without once looking back.
“Devon, you’re dead if you ruin this chance.” Kylan murmured.
Lyn took another breath in, Riya nodded. “That’s my girl.” Lyn then walked forward but fell on the ground. “That... is not my girl.”
Devon looked down, Kylan nodded. “Give her a hand!” Devon turned away and flipped his hair, Kylan mentally slapped himself in the head. Lyn slowly got up and dusted her clothes with her hands.
“Hi Devon.” She mustered out, Devon didn’t look but nodded in reply. “Are you doing a project?” He nodded. “Nice, what’s it about?” Devon shrugged.
“Say something.” Kylan whispered fiercely.
Riya tilted her head, doing so she leaned in closer to Kylan who was temporarily distracted. “Lyn, don’t give up.” She ordered under her breath.
Devon then took out his phone and texted, he closed it and resumed his work. Kylan woke from his trance when he felt his phone vibrate and looked at it.
‘I’m going to go castrate both of you. Riya won’t like half a man.” Kylan shuddered.
As Devon was close to finishing, Lyn tightened her fists. “Can you say something,” She started out fiercely, he glanced at her, just as quickly she lost all resolve. “....Please?”
“Attempted.” Riya murmured.
“Just go for it!” Jayin nearly screamed but both Riya and Kylan covered his mouth.
Devon wiped his hands on his pants and headed towards the door when it closed. He noticed Lyn’s hand on the door, he looked at her from the corner of her eyes.
“All right Lyn!” Riya raised her fist in the air.
She then walked and stood between him and the door and looked him straight in the eyes. “Devon, did you send me that love note?”
Devon blinked. “Eh?”
“Did you send me that love note?” She tried to maintain her courage but it was slowly dwindling under his stare.
“YES HE DID-” They both turned at the sound but saw no one. Devon coughed and looked away from her.
“I need to get my things.” He stated, she soon cowered as she felt herself become more and more nervous.
“This jerk.” Kylan declared under his breath, Jayin nodded. He noticed Riya’s odd smile. “Are you all right?”
“Perfectly fine.” She said, she stared at the duo.
Just as Devon was about to walk around her, she pulled his arms and forced a direct kiss on his lips.
“WHOA!” Jayin yelled as he sprouted up. “Lyn! You’re too young for that!”
Lyn heard him and pulled away immediately, she glanced at the trio who burst in through the door.
“Aside from all that... FINALLY~!” Jayin sang. “I can now rest in peace.”
Riya smiled smugly. “Lyn, didn’t know you had it in you.”
Kylan laughed. “Definitely surprised Devon.” Lyn turned completely red and hurriedly walked out of the supply room. Riya and Jayin followed as Kylan stayed behind and watched Devon. He slowly walked inside and stood in front of him, he then lifted Devon’s hair from his eyes.
“Oh, you fainted.”
