Factors that make a sexual act deviant:
1. Consent (rape...)
2. Nature of sexual partner (single, married, etc.)
3. Nature of sexual act (S&M, etc... not mainstream)
4. Where act occurs (setting)
All societies define certain sex partners as acceptable/unacceptable. Engaging in sex with unacceptable partners is considered deviant. Every society identifies certain partners as "off-limits" to some, but acceptable to others. Examples are married people or close relatives.
Deviant sexual acts consist of "unusual and bizarre" as defined by majority in a given society.
Deviant settings, in an extreme form, the behavior is labeled as "exhibitionism" (though I'm sure you already knew that.)
Other Deviant Sexual Behaviors:
How often?>> Too often? -Sex Addict. Not often enough? -Frigid
When?>> Menstruation, pregnancy, after birth.
Age?>> Too old, too young.
How many partners?>> Gender differences, sexual orientation, same time.
Purchasing/consuming sexual material/services.
Then we also talked about the differences between the Essentialist and Construcionist perspective, as well as gender & sexuality, teenage sex, extramarital sex, pornography, prostitution, and homosexuality.
An interesting question that was brought up was: Which is more deviant? Homosexuality, bisexuality, asexuality, or homophobia?
