Its also a good lesson in why sometimes sticking to the book so rigidly doesn't always work for television, some of those scenes could have been shortened considerably.
If could be me remembering wrong, but Quirke's past as an orphan in a horror orphanage (If the judge hadn't of rescued him, he most probably would not have survived at all) haunts him, and I would have thought there would be flashbacks or something so we get a sense of why he is the way he is. Perhaps next week.
I certainly feel sorry for Mal - I don't remember him being such a jerk in the books, just more... bowing to convention, but he's certainly not spineless
The Madonna/Whore thing was quite well done here, because all the men are putting women on pedestals in some way, the perfect daughter, wife etc.

Especially since I get the feeling that a lot of viewers won't watch the first two episodes, but simply skip to Colin's one. So if Phoebe is acting standoffish or rude, they'll have no understanding why.
