Dan was given the go-ahead to put in for his transfer this morning (well, yesterday morning now, since it is after midnight). He will be taking all of the info he needs with him tomorrow (err... today) , and starting the ball rolling. We will see what happens ( Read more... )

We cannot afford to continue where we are. In the next few months, we must either have a new job for him where he is making more money, or go to where our safety net is (you know where). Since his months of job searching up here have not yielded any results for him, and the job market in this area is only getting worse, I started sifting through job listings down there. After all, if we end up having to go there, it would be better to have a job lined up before we get there, kwim?

Well, the very first job I found was a listing that had been posted that very day for a job of the same exact rank with the same company that he currently works for, at the local store. For him, it would be a transfer, with benefits intact and the same number of hours and same pay, so I encouraged him to look into it.

Well, the job listing was removed a few days later because the mgr down there wasn't sure if the job was still going to exist or not when the company got done "restructuring". But then he got the call from the guy down there saying the DM had finally given the go ahead to start the process.

Dan had to apply for it, so it isn't a sure thing yet, but he has all of the qualifications needed (obviously), has already gone through the company's mgmt training program (obviously), and he already has a place to stay (so if they offer it to him, it isn't going to fall through due to housing issues). He also got a glowing review of his salesmanship from his current boss, which impressed the guy down there, who has already told Dan that of all the candidates for the job, Dan is the one he hopes will get it. Ultimately, it is the DMs decision though, so we will see what happens...

If he gets the job, he will likely have to start down there in just a few weeks. I am not sure yet if our landlord will let us out of our lease (no sense in asking just yet), but I would probably need extra time for packing anyway before I make my exodus.... We will keep yas posted!

In the meantime, we should definitely try to schedule a time to hang out! When we are all over this silly cold, that is... :-/
Hugs!

Well, good luck! Though I do recall you were very, very unhappy there last time, and your safety net had some serious holes. Be careful, and yes, we shall hang! Feel better.

This is true, but there has been much discussion about how to ensure things are better this time. The main reason I was miserable there last time was because I had given up the ability to see my family and friends, only to end up not being able to see Dan either, because he was working 70-80 hours per week. That will not and can not happen this time, and he knows it. Not only for my sake, but also for the sake of his ability to (finally) finish school, which he had to quit last time we were down there because of said ridiculous work schedule. That is one of the things that makes this transfer possibility so attractive: he is a manager, but he is paid on an hourly basis, it is very unlikely that he will be asked to work more than 40 hours.

Regarding the other flaws in the situation last time around... well, all parties involved have had a few years of opportunity to think and to grow, and there has been much discussion about expectations and plans to allow more integration of the households where necessary and more privacy where necessary as well. If we end up going down there again, it will be with a much more defined plan. I'm not saying it will be easy, but all steps are being taken to ensure that things stay on as even a keel as possible.

And besides, we have all seen what happens when we get thrown out into the world with no savings, no degree, no gameplan, and totally unprepared. The last two years of hardship, starting with homelessness less than two weeks after our arrival, are proof of that! And since none of us want to see that happen again, and none of us can holds any delusions about our capacity for self-sufficiency sans bachelors degree any more, we all have a very good incentive to make it work, kwim?

I think it will work out, if we go. There will be hard times, I am sure, but I think it will work. And if Dan is making the same pay there as he is here, we will even be able to get out of debt and salvage our credit. Another bonus, to be sure... :-)
