Character Information
Name: Raven Darkholme AKA Mystique
Fandom: X-MEN: First Class
Timeline Summary: Immediately after the end of the movie.
Background: Wiki Link!
Personality: This younger, more naive Mystique is a very different person from the cold, ruthless killer she will one day turn into.

Though Raven is no stranger to the extreme prejudices against mutants and the feeling associated with being an outsider, she has been fortunate enough to have grown up in a very comfortable environment alongside her foster brother, Charles Xavier. With his constant protection and her own ability to hide her true form, it was easy enough for the young mutant to breeze through her teenage years and mature beautifully. But naturally, a deep resentment began to boil under the surface, towards both other 'normal looking' people and even towards her own unique appearance. This unease with herself led the poor young woman to almost take a serum that, if it had worked correctly, would have taken away her blue skin and yellow eyes and left her just as average as everyone else.

However, because of one Erik Lehnsherr's involvement and insistence of her blue skin actually being beautiful, Raven has finally come to accept herself and her strange looks. Though she will use her disguises when necessary and for the comfort of others or non-mutants, the woman no longer feels any need to look 'normal' for her friends. She's all natural now, baby.

She possesses a quick and flawless intelligence that fits in quite perfectly with her mutant power, giving Raven an upperhand in many scenarios despite her lack of physical training so far. It is shown that she grows up to be a very cunning individual, though that will obviously take some future development before she has a full grasp on it, but the start of that cleverness has already begun to show through.

Raven is a forever loyal woman by nature and is fiercely protective of the very few people (mutants) that she truly cares for and is close to. However, with all that has happened in these chaotic last few months, it is only natural to hear that her loyalties may sometimes feel divided. She has yet to grow the backbone needed to fully shove off her sisterly feelings towards Charles, so even if she is unquestionably on Erik's side of the fight, she still cares far too deeply for her brother to do anything to actually hurt him.

Despite all that has happened and everything she has gone through in these last months, Raven still has managed to keep her sweet and cheerful nature, that intense sarcasm and wit shining through in even the darkest of moments. That in unlikely to change anytime soon.

Looking closely at her relationships with the two most important men in her life, her brother and her lover, it is easy to see just how Raven's character has grown.

Before Charles, the foster brother who took her in, it is very obvious to see that even as a child she'd never had very pleasant experiences with others in her true form. Raven's depressingly sad question to Charles 'You aren't scared of me?' sums up her previous relationships before that moment well. The girl has had nothing but bad luck in life so far. But the young telepath not only befriends Raven and shows her that she really is not the only mutant in the world, but also gives her a place to call home and a reliable family. Which is exactly what she needed. The child thrives under his constant protection and attention, finally learning just what it means to have a family. Because of his kindness to her and all of their memories together since childhood, Raven will always have a very deep love for the man she calls brother, no matter what side he is on.

With Erik, however, it was different. Erik is a newer constant in the young woman's life. She's known him a considerably shorter time than she has Charles, but the impact he's made was significant enough for her to leave her brother and follow alongside him. Though life with the Xavier family was more than she could have ever hoped for, Raven had no choice but to hide her real looks from everyone, causing a very deep resentment towards other 'normal-looking' people. But despite all of the other mutants she has come across, Erik was the only one to not only encourage her to stop hiding, but to say that her appearance was perfect. This, of course, is the leap it took for Raven to not only accept the way she looks but to finally embrace it.

Because of his influence, Raven is finally confident in her own skin and will loyally follow Magneto just about anywhere that he would go without hesitation. She not only cares for him as a lover, but also as an underling admiring her commanding leader.

Powers, Skills, and Abilities: Mystique's mutant 'defect' is her ability to shapeshift at any given time, changing her physical form so that she is an exact replica of absolutely anyone else she has seen with her own two eyes (in person or by photograph), even going so far as to completely duplicate their voice and clothes expertly. But while she can copy another perfectly, it should be remembered that it is only the appearance of her skin that changes. If she takes the form of another mutant, she does not take their powers. If she were to shapeshift into Wolverine, her 'adamantium claws' would only be made of her own flesh, not actual metal.

Her shapeshifting is so exact that the woman can even copy eye retina patterns and fingerprints by a mere look.

Because of her strange, shifting biology, the woman ages at a much slower rate than 'normal' and can heal up from wounds at a very rapid pace. Her body is also able to build up an immunity to poisons.

At this age, Mystique is still only learning just how far the limits of her special form can take her. In time, she will become a master hand-to-hand fighter and one of the most agile mutants around. However, she still has quite some time to develop the skills so expertly executed by her older self.

First Person: [Video Post]
H-hello? [After that first cautious squeak of a word, a blue face peers down at the screen of the strange device in her hand. Raven's current expression (if you can get over the scaly blue skin and feral yellow eyes) is a mix of carefulness and the slightest hint of fear, but already those feelings are being pushed away by her ever-gnawing curiosity. As startling and downright scary as being thrust into this new place alone is, the young mutant is just too optimistic and eager to let her more negative emotions take over quite yet. She wants to find out where she is and why she's there first.]

Hey, um, could someone tell me just where I happened to end up? This is honestly the first time this has ever happened to me... [Oh God, how does this make her sound? Like some kind of party girl whose head is so far gone she somehow manages to wander outside of the city limits? Not the best for a first impression, really.

However, in the midst of her tumbling thoughts and worries, there's the smallest lurch of her stomach as the blue woman realizes that she very well could have just been left behind by her teammates, but the thought is thankfully dismissed without a single pause. While Raven may not have the most solid of trust built up in most of her fellow Brotherhood members, she does believe that Erik would never abandon her. Never.

Her trust in him is too great and he cares too deeply to ever do that to her.]

And, if you're out there, please answer me, Magneto.

Third Person:
'Well then, it behooves me to tell you that even if we save the world tomorrow and mutants are accepted into society, that my feet and your natural blue form will never be deemed beautiful.'

Try as she might to get those world shattering words out of her mind as she raced to away from the man, young Raven Darkholme just couldn't help but take Hank's brutal honesty straight to heart. And, to her own surprise, the hurt that came with believing him was just too much for her to handle.

Yes, it was no secret that the shapeshifting mutant had always held onto a deep resentment towards her own 'unique' appearance. But despite growing up with that difficulty on her shoulders, Raven had never had someone else (and someone she cared so much for like Hank!) ever confirm that her own fears were actually completely justified. That, because of a single genetic mutation at the molecular level to her DNA, she truly had a reason to hate herself for the way she was born.

The transformed woman nudged her way gracelessly into her own washroom, shutting and locking the door behind her for a single moment of absolute privacy. In a house full of rambunctious male mutants that small relief was becoming increasingly rare for her. Finally away from the prying eyes of her dear brother and her close friends, Raven's gaze flicked towards the mirror.

There are still tears in her eyes as the silent ripple of blue began to spread upwards-- past her slim wrists, across those slender arms, and up to cover her lovely face. In a single blink, the peachy, blonde teenager is replaced by a truly terrifying sight. A demon, or so she can't help but think, with scaly blue skin and feral yellow eyes. Though the sight of her own face should have come as no surprise to her now, a look of disgust quickly flashed over Raven's downtrodden expression.

How could anyone ever believe she was beautiful like this?

Blue lips pressed firmly together, Raven leaned in towards the mirror to fully and carefully scrutinize her own sad reflection. A set of feminine fingers move up to caress her scaled cheek, the pain of the young scientist's words still cutting deeply. His voice just wouldn't stop echoing in her head.

It was rather strange, wasn't it? In a matter of only seconds, Raven's newest friend, a man with an abnormality almost as unpleasant as her own, had effortlessly shredded apart her delicate confidence. That ego she'd been slowly building up these last few years was now in ripped pieces at her feet.

Did everyone here, these fellow mutants residing in her own home, really think that her real form was just as hideous and frightening as she'd always believed it to be? Should she be ashamed of her appearance and vow to never show her true form to another living soul again?

'By the way,' A memory flashed by quickly of someone else. Definitely not Hank. 'If I looked like you, I wouldn't change a thing.'

...Perhaps there was someone who liked her the way she was.

Hank, the one mutant that Raven had believed could truly understand her, had instead cut her down abruptly with absolutely no regard to her feelings.

But, perhaps, Erik could mend her wounded pride and make the girl feel beautiful again.
