...that the Autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair.

St Nicholas Fair is usually a day for railway photography but this year there didn't seem to be much going on at the station so I took a ride round the footbridges of the town.

First a ride to Railway Terrace bridge for a scout round. Just in time for a retro-liveried 60 on a VERY heavy aggregates train. It was quite impressive seeing it accelerate 2500 tonnes across Holgates Junction without breaking sweat.

A quick pedal round to the Carriage Works to snap a 57 I'd seen earlier. Unfortunately it looked like it had been caged and the best shot was to be had over the "veldt" of Holgate Park.

Hidden away in the Carriage Works sidings were a pair of ancient Class 20s on either end of a leaf washing train. These are nearly as old as me and make many of the same noises.

I was in luck as they set off for the main line just as I got close. The sunlight was at a better angle as they made their way through the gate. And off to York North for a turn around.

I rode up to Love Lane footbridge and arrived just in time to catch the 20s heading Westwards.

And into the sunset.

Saturdays are usually pretty thin for freight trains but at this point they were coming through Holgates at about one every ten minutes all backed by a fiery Winter sunset whose light made even a train of supermarket boxes look picturesque.

Not the finest sunset I've ever seen but a spot well worth returning to.
