To certain Snevans and Lily/James shippers who base Lily's worth and well being on either man:

At times like this I feel like shipping Snape/James just to spite all of you. That ship needs more people anyway.

ETA:
So I decided to search for some Snape/James shipping fanart to see if any exists. Out of the rare 3 that I found on deviantART so far, already one artist doesn't seem like Lily (though I can't tell if they're kidding). Man, this ship ( Read more... )

After seeing comments like "I ship Snape/James, Lily was a bitch who wasn't good enough for any of them" I'm not tempted by Snape/James, sorry.

Btw, what prompted your post?

Aww crap. Though I had a feeling those type of Lily haters would be out there as well.

I just read SIP's essay on James and stealing, and she makes emphasis on James stealing Lily. But the whole thing stealing Lily thing has been around for years. And then there were also Lily/James shippers who hate Snape and thought Lily being with him would taint her somehow which has also been around for years. There's been fail on all sides when it comes to sexism and Lily.

LOL, now James 'stole' Lily? Oh god. It seems that either way, the poor girl has no agency, in the eyes of these fen.

"LOL, now James 'stole' Lily?"

I've seen this more than enough times in Snape fandom.

It reminds me of the "she stole my man" thing. Usually it applies only to women stealing men, I've rarely heard it being used for women who have affairs.

I've heard on rare occasions of men using the phrase on other men. I think sometimes its easier for people to blame someone else instead of the person they want/care about. Either way I hate the phrasing. It's still an inaccurate depiction of the situation. But women definitely get more flack for it.

I agree. And, ugh, I can see why people go with the he/she "stole" someone theory when they are thinking about someone they like/love dumping them, but I hate it with a passion. This idea that hearts can be stolen just drives me nuts. Like free will doesn't exist, or something. Our own hearts are one of the few things we have control over, in this world. Maybe we don't have complete control over who we are attracted to or find attractive, but we have control over who we give our hearts to or whether we act on any attraction, or not.

There's a whole package of "woman as object" that comes attached to how worth is determined and "theft" which I don't want to go into at length. You hear the same thing in discussions about Hermione and Ginny from the more rabid shippers. Of course, on the flip side, you also hear it about Harry sometimes.

Yay misogyny!
