i remember after the 2008 election there was a project called from 52 to 48 (or something similar), and it was basically photos of people holding up hopeful signs. lots of people who'd voted democrat saying, basically, "we have to work together and i'm extending my hand to you across the aisle because we can do this and i'm going to make sure your voice is heard", and lots of people who'd voted republican saying, basically, "i'm extending my hand to you too and i'm ready to work together". (also the occasional photo from a non-american, and a bunch from, like, couples where one voted repub and one voted dem.) there was a lot of hope that everyone could make the country great again, and that repubs and dems - at least the average jane and joe on the street - could work together and get shit done. and the thing you said to your quaker meeting made me think of that - it's a very gracious, generous thing to extend to people who are politically your enemy, especially since they probably wouldn't have returned the favor. it's really depressing how much things have changed.
