I'm hereby instituting Calvinball rules- which means the rules are invented by the players, on the fly, and constantly change. So you basically get to reinvent the meme whenever you get tagged: rewrite the questions, change rules on tagging, anything you like. Or you can follow it straight if you prefer.
My philosophy on buying books: I usually only buy a book if I'm intending to read it several times, or if it's a reference book that I'll use for more than four months. Occasionally I buy used books that don't meet this criteria if they're under a dollar. I rely very heavily on the public library system, and probably have an average of 15 books out at any given time; sometimes that number is over 30.

Authentic Happiness and Learned Optimism, by Martin Seligman
To Engineer is Human, by Henry Petroski
Another book I care about for personal reasons: Heinlein's Door into Summer, for its unrelenting optimism, the conviction that nothing is irreversible and anything can be fixed.
