So there I am in the Harvard Square T station with way too many tokens for the train and not enough money to get on the commuter rail. The lovely folks in the booth refused to buy them back, so I walked up and down the very long line of people waiting to buy tokens and tried to sell them at a special discount price of one dollar each. What happened next disturbed me. I was completely ignored. People wouldn't even look me in the eye. They acted as though I was invisible, refusing to even acknowledged my existence. They stood silent, looking in the other direction, wishing I would go away. Not a nod or a "No thank you I would rather stand in line and spend more money for my public transportation"...nothing.
Eventually I did sell of them, And made it all the way back to Haverhill, Again disturbed by the actions of the city dweller. Ten years ago I was violently beaten in a similar T station in that very same city. And although I couldn't catch a good glimpse of the many people who stood near by. I imagine they looked just as the people standing in line to buy tokens did They stood silent, looking in the other direction, wishing I would go away.
