This film was not one I am fannish about, and I certainly wasn't expecting to find and like M/M written for it. But this story works psychologically, because after being marooned for so long, Mark would have needed human touch to a degree that would have demanded lots of team hugs and probably lots of comfort sex, as soon as his health recovered. To me, this works because it's not romantic, and it seems in character. We got a feel for Watney's character as he monologued through the film, and this rings true. Also, to me this does read like two guys finding they need each other, not like slash written by a woman, seen through a woman's gaze (which also works for me personally, but you grok what I mean, right? You've read M/M written by men that is different, I assume).
