Background/Personality: Relena was born as the princess of the Sanc Kingdom, a pacifistic kingdom that wished to end all wars by following the ideals of the colonist leader, Heero Yuy. This attitude led the Earth Sphere Alliance to invade the Kingdom. Both the king and queen were killed and Relena only survived because Vice-Minister Darlian smuggled the infant Relena out of the country and raised her as his own child. As she grew up, Mr. Darlian raised Relena to have the same pacifistic ideals that her biological parents had so valued, though he never revealed her true origins.
Relena's story really begins when after returning from a trip to outer space, she finds a boy unconscious on the beach. After regaining consciousness, the boy, Heero, ended up stealing the ambulance Relena had called for him and made his escape, leaving Relena in awe. Imagine her surprise when that same ambulance-jacking boy turned up at her school as a transfer student. Imagine her surprise magnified when after she invited him to her fifteenth birthday (he rejected the invitation totally) he told her that he was going to kill her. The following day at her fifteenth birthday party, Relena was informed by one of her classmates that he'd seen Heero head for the nearby military base in an ambulance. Knowing something was about to go down, Relena ditched her party to go after him. She found him, too with several torpedoes that he was planning to use to blow up his Gundam.
Heero pulled a gun on her, fully prepared to go through with his death threat, up until another pilot, Duo, showed up and shot him first. Now, most girls having just been saved from being shot would be eternally grateful to their savior, right? WRONG. Relena ignored Duo, and rushed to check on Heero, and then after Duo shot him a second time she stood between them to try and protect her murderer-to-be. Then Heero went and nearly got himself killed as he released the torpedoes on both his own Gundam and Duo's, which were surfacing from the bottom of the ocean. After that, Heero was taken to the hospital. Relena went to visit him there, but before she could see him, Duo had already broken Heero out and both had made their escape.
Shortly after that, Relena went with her father on another trip into space on a mission to initiate peace talks with the colonies. However, Colonel Lady Une, under orders from the leader of OZ Special Forces leader Treize Kushrenada, assassinated her father right right before her eyes with a bomb concealed within a compact. Running back into the building she found her father mortally injured but alive. Before Lady Une could finish the job killing Relena's father, a faction of freedom fighters on the colony showed up and whisked them away. It was during this escape, shortly before breathing his last, that Mr. Darlian revealed Relena's true heritage as a Peacecraft. This is also when Relena met Dr. J, the enigmatic scientist who trained Heero and built his Gundam. Rather than lying to her, Dr. J told Relena everything, how Heero was a trained killer and that if she got in his way the Gundam pilot would most likely kill her as well. With that warning, Dr. J bundled her onto a shuttle and sent her back to earth, leaving Relena to contemplate the ramifications of what she had learned.
Back on earth, Relena discovered Heero was transferring and decided to tell him she knew what he really was, and that she was on his side. She also convinced him to go to the school dance with her before he left. Too bad that moment was interrupted by OZ mobile suits crashing the party hoping to find Wing Gundam and Relena (two birds with one stone and all that). Heero stopped them, saving her life in the process and then fled before Relena could speak to him.

Relena spent some time trailing after Heero after that, trying to find out where he was. During this time she also attended a party that Lady Une was at and took a shot at her (literally). Relena was almost captured by OZ for that, though she was saved at the last minute by Lucrezia Noin, an OZ soldier loyal to and in love with Zechs. Noin in turn brought Relena to the Sanc Kingdom, which had been recently liberated from Alliance rule by Zechs as part of an earth sphere-wide OZ coup, and reinstated her as the monarch. Still searching for Heero, Relena discovered that Zechs and Heero were going to have a fight in Antarctica and with Noin's help made it there in hopes of stopping the battle. However as she came upon the battlefield and tried to stop them, Zechs instead went on to ruthlessly attack Heero while he was down, prompting Relena to lose her temper and order him to kill Zechs. Noin then revealed the truth, that Zechs was actually her elder brother Milliardo Peacecraft. Soon after that OZ once again crashed the party and Relena's escape was covered by Milliardo and Heero.
Relena disappeared for a while in series while the Gundam pilots were up in space and during that time she settled into her duties as princess of the Sanc Kingdom. She pushed the pacifist ideals that she believed in and taught this belief to girls at the Sanc Kingdom academy. It was during this time that Relena met Dorothy Catalonia, cousin of Treize and granddaughter of Duke Dermail, the leader of the Romefeller Foundation that supported OZ. Dorothy was Relena's polar opposite in ideals about war and would often play devil's advocate during Relena's classes. During this time Relena also allowed Quatre and Heero to stay in the Sanc Kingdom when they returned from space.
But despite Relena's insistence on the Sanc Kingdoms pacifism, Romefeller didn't intend to leave it untouched and used the presence of Treize Faction OZ soldiers on the borders of the kingdom to launch an attack. The kingdom was protected from that attack by the white Taurus mobile suits that Noin had hidden away, as well as the Gundam pilots. Once the battle was over, Relena pardoned all of their actions because she knew that if not for Noin's actions the Sanc Kingdom would have fallen. Shortly after Romefeller requested a meeting with Relena where she was forced to denounce Milliardo as a representative of the Sanc Kingdom. When she leaves however, Romefeller attempts to assassinate her, though thankfully Quatre managed to intervene and save her life. Romafeller began to rally its military forces to strike out at the Sanc Kingdom. As her peaceful country became a warzone Relena did the only thing she could to preserve her ideals of peace; she surrendered to the Romefeller Foundation.
However, instead of sticking Relena in jail, Duke Dermail decided to turn Relena into a figurehead for the Romafeller Foundation by turning her into queen of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation. Though instead of being used as a puppet leader, Relena used her new position to further her ideals of peace. In fact she so impressed the other members of the Romefeller Foundation with her ideals that they ousted Duke Dermail as dictator. She also inadvertently convinced Heero not to kill her, since she proved not to be a puppet leader.

Around this time, Milliardo- now as the leader of the White Fang colonial freedom organization- declared war on the OZ-led Earth Sphere. Treize also returned from his exile to relieve Relena of her position as queen of the Earth Sphere so that she could go into space in order to stop Milliardo- though her arguments weren't enough to convince him. Dorothy offered Relena a gun as another method to end the conflict, but she refused it because she didn't want to resort to assassination. Heero eventually rescued her from the White Fang's ship Libra and left her on the Earth Sphere Unified Nation command post with Howard, a retired mobile suit engineer, and Lady Une. Une, seeming repentant for her assassination of Relena's father, offers Relena a gun so the girl can have a second shot at revenge. Relena turned her down, wanting to avoid more violence so as to end the fighting. Relena after that was left to watch the conflict play out without much of a hand to play in it beyond hoping for the best.
Fast-forwarding to Relena's 16th birthday, she was serving the same position that her father held as Vice Foreign Minister. Upon getting on a shuttle to return to earth, Relena found a card and bear left for her by Heero as a birthday present and, almost in a parody of when they first met, Relena tore up the card as he walked away.
Jumping ahead in time a little more, Relena in her duties as Vice Foreign Minister visited the L3 colony X-18999 to talk with them, only to be kidnapped by the Mariemaia Army when she was given drugged tea. When she awoke she was greeted with the most precocious child she had ever met, Mariemaia Barton, who claimed to be the daughter of Treize Kushrenada. It was explained as Mariemaia took Relena to earth that Relena was a valuable hostage who would guarantee that there wouldn't be resistance during Mariemaia's coup.
On earth, the army took over the Earth Sphere Unified Nation capital in Brussels and Relena was sealed into a bunker far beneath the ground to sit and wait for the coup to be complete. Forced to sit back and watch as the Preventers and Gundam Pilots fought against the Mariemaia army, Relena realized something and tried to tell the citizens of the Earth Sphere to fight back, admitting after she was cut off that she had been running from the truth. Once Heero arrived on the scene, accepting Mariemaia's challenge to test the strength of the bunker (and won), Mariemaia was proved to be a mere puppet to mastermind Dekim Barton's will. Lady Une, who had arrived on the scene just before Heero's final shot from Zero, was about to slap the little girl when Relena stepped in and slapped the girl instead and brought her back to her senses. CROWNING MOMENT OF AWESOME.
Dekim didn't like that they had cowed his puppet into common sense and attempted to shoot Relena. In a selfless act of bravery Mariemaia took the bullet for her. Dekim was executed on the spot by one of the Mariemaia soldiers and then to make things a little more complicated Heero appeared on the scene prepared to kill Mariemaia. However, the gun he fired at the injured child was empty, and then he collapsed into Relena's arms, leaving Relena relieved that the fighting was finally over.
Personality - Relena started off in the series as a rather immature and spoiled girl with no real concerns about what was happening in the world around her. Throughout the series she grew up into someone better than she was at the beginning.
First off, Relena is a technical pacifist. She believes that the only way to peace is to lay down arms and work together; however she has acknowledged that in order to maintain peace some fighting must happen. It can't simply be handed to someone, but must be maintained and worked towards by everyone. She is completely dedicated to her beliefs and is strong willed enough to go to almost any length to do what she feels is right. Relena is also very stubborn and sticks by her guns (metaphorical of course) till the very end.

A kind individual, Relena seems to be able to become close to a great many people by virtue of the fact that she doesn't have any kind of hidden agenda. However weak Relena might be physically she has a great strength in her charisma, which has earned her the loyalty of a great many people. She does seem to have feelings for a certain Gundam pilot, but she's also grown up enough to know that she doesn't have to chase after him all the time.
