Testing Crochet Lace Pattern

Oct 06, 2011 02:31

I went looking through the digital library of crochet lace edging that I’ve been collecting. I found one that I think gives a nice look, reminiscent of some of the Italian hanky pieces. It’s from an antique book, from 1915, Priscilla Crochet Book, Edgings and Insertions. I am using a thin cotton embroidery thread, and a very small crochet hook. I just wanted to make sure the pattern worked, so I re-wrote it, using the long hand, and also wrote out the stitch directions, since I think it uses different terminology than modern American crochet.

It could use a bit mores specific directions, but I think it will be easy enough to “edit” to fit. So I think tomorrow I’ll make up the linen hanky part, then I’ll start on the lace.

One thing I noticed, a lot of the hankys in the paintings have edges, but the main part is plain. I don’t know if that’s just because it’s easier to paint, or if they really didn’t have the embroidery, like in the few surviving pieces we have. I like how this turned out. I’m excited to see how it will do on a larger piece.
